Anyone ever ran into this problem?

Ive got a 2001 Schwinn Homegrown that came with a Manitou Mars Super. Its always had this hissing sound to it. I even called tech support a while back (probably in 2001) and they told me that it was bleeding air from the oil side. I figured if its anything like a hydraulic system, they are probably right.

Well last week, I was doing maintenance on the bike and I lubed the fork. After doing so I tested it with some light, medium and hard compression. That hissing noise was much louder and I discovered grease leaking from a crack on the inside (spoke side) of the air/coil leg. WTF?? It actually ruptured from the inside.

The thing is out of warranty and the part that cracked looks like it isnt a repairable part. Any verdicts?

You found a leak on the lower. What material is it. If you don't have money for a new one I think weldng would fix it. Check with a pro welder for safety issues but it should get you more time on the fork.

I'm no welder but those lowers are magnesium and they get all kinds of bright and shiny (in a flare kinda way) when you apply enough heat to them. Time for a new fork Spud

How old is it? Are you buddies with the LBS? Try to get it warrantied. Send Manitou an e-mail and see what they say. You'll probably have to send it to them, but chances are, they rebuild it for a minimal charge and you'll have a factory freshened fork!
