What are the warning signs (early signs to late signs) of a hip that is going bad and may need to be replaced? Thanks.

A bad Tour de France Stage in the Alps followed by a stunning 100 mile breakaway comeback the next day.

If this happens to you, seek out a hip replacement surgeon immediately.

The main warning sign is just being alive. If you live long enough, all of your parts will eventually need to be replaced.

Enjoy!

My 87 year old father had his hip re-replaced today. The warning sign was that his replaced hip had dislocated three times in the last couple of years. (He is doing great, btw.) I thought that he would be "all over" Floyd and what he had accomplished, but he knew almost nothing about it. SIGH.

I would think that the warning sign would pain in your hip, like with most other medical warning signs.. although that could be ten thousand things, like arthritis, or a pulled muscle, or a torn ligament, etc, etc... which is why a doctor will tell you if what you're feeling is pain that will eventually lead to your next Ti ball and socket joint.

edit: I've dislocated my left shoulder 5 times, but the joint is fine. I have a ligament or something on my left side that is partially f'd, hence the dislocations. Didn't want to pay for surgery, so I just lift weights to stregthen the shoulder muscles and it hasn't happened again in almost 12yrs.

from personal experience

bulging intervertebral disc = some serious hip pain.

see a doctor if you're exhibiting symptoms that worry you.

That is funny!:D Even though that was not the reason he cracked!

Patient: Doc, when will it be time to replace the hip?

Doctor: You'll know.

What are the warning signs (early signs to late signs) of a hip that is going bad and may need to be replaced? Thanks.Lloyd Flanders just didn't get a bad hip from riding his bike; he had a bad crash, and the area didn't heel properly.

I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) the blood supply to the head of the femur was comprimised, causing unusual wear in the hip joint, causing all the trouble.

100% correct. I think the crash was in the US? During his USPS days?

When his posts become shorter, no longer mention the KNAVE, and no longer cares about what you wore when reading your ride report....*shudder* ...definite sign of a needed replacement.

I am just asking what a warning sign is.

Very painful hip, walking with a limp, having trouble doing stairs.....

Are you a hypocondriac (sp?)?!?!?

Your hip hurts.

+1

I'm glad I wasn't the first one here.

Pain... something just doesn't feel right... limitation of motion... discoloration... weakness...

All good reasons to see a doctor whether hip, knee, ankle, wrist, navel or any other body part...

If anything isn't right see a doctor.

:D :D :D

But cereally folks.....

OK...little things in daily life start getting worse and worse....then you have an issue...for instance:

--Sleeping on that side gets more and more painful

--A limp becomes more and more apparent

--The motion of bending down to put your socks on gets more and more difficult

--Getting in and out of a vehicle becomes more and more of a chore

These are some of the signs in everyday life that there is an issue there.
Beyond that, well, the whole pain thing is the main test here. If it gets to be too much of a bother, just go get an X-ray. The picture will give a clear indication of any issues with the joint.

Early warning sign = the fact that you are asking about it!

Before my father had his replaced he could hear it popping while walking! Plus there was the intense pain.
