Mountain Biking - I have a stupid question...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. View Full Version : I have a stupid question...

I'm installing some new tires (Michelin Jet S tubeless!) and I have a stupid question on direction.

On the side of the tire, it looks like this

<--------- Rear - Front ----------->

Does this mean that the arrow should point in the direction that the tire will be rolling, or does it mean that the arrow should be pointing towards the front of the bike? I remember somebody telling me it was the rolling direction, but I imagine my tires will handle badly if I mess this up, so any help is appreciated.

I know.. dumb question :p

The arrow should point in the direction that the tire will be rolling.

However, you can break the rule when using a rear XC tire for DH use, as a reversed tire will give you superior use when breaking.

I have a stupid question

There are no stupid questions. Just stupid people.:p

Toooo tempting, had to do it.

Yes. The tire is to be mounted in the direction of the arrows. They do this so you get better braking up front and better traction in the rear.

Somehow, when mounting my wheel back on the bike, I managed to bend the tabs on my disc brakes, causing the metal tabs to scrape against the discs. ****ing great.

I think I am going to go to my room and cry.

Explain. I'm confused!!!

Also explain to me how I singlehandedly managed to destroy my disc brakes without even riding them.

This really pisses me off. There's these two little tiny springs that you use to remove the pads... and I somehow managed to bend them inward, so now they're pinching against the rotor. Wonderful... I can't do ANYTHING without breaking ****.

Let me know how it turns out as I haven't tinkered with mine yet and wouldn't know where to begin.....yet

Perhaps the beer was my problem :o

I have mangled the spring too badly, so I contacted Avid and even though it was MY fault that I bent the little spring, they're going to send me two new ones for free! This pleases me.

It's really pretty simple to replace the pads, actually. Just pinch the spring, and the pads come out pretty easy. Assuming your spring isnt mangled to all hell, that is :p

Ah I see grasshopper, too much brew makes mind cloudy, and little springy not do what it's supposed to do.

What is this?

Is this the same jim311 that has recently and very patiently pm'd and helped me through the subtle art of installing XO on my rig?

Is this the same jim311 who exhibiting superior knowledge in one direction successfully damages his disc setup in another?

jim, you are human! Feel bad about it but learn and move on. Maybe you need another beer or two and chew a grasshopper.

The guy at the bike shop actually told me that I didn't even need that little spring. So I took it out... and I think he was right :o

The classic law of rebuilding cars and bikes. You always end up with bits left over which proves beyond dispute that it was over-engineered to begin with.:)
