i am in the process of applying to medical school and was wondering if there are any med students on this forum that can give me an idea of how much stuff they haul around with them on a daily basis.

i'm going to get a new bag soon for the commuting and occassional grocery shopping i do right now (need something bigger and waterproof), however, next year i'll hopefully be hauling books around, too, and i'd rather not have to invest again in a year because i bought something too small this time around. i was thinking somewhere around 2000 cu inches, but not sure whether that would be too much.

also, i'm a fit 5'6" female, so i'm not working with a huge (body) frame.

Many medical schools are moving away from textbooks and going to laptops. Check with current students at the school you'd most likely attend. There have beem many changes since I finished medical school in 1992.

Trust me, I'm a healthcare administrator. Hmmm. Doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Just curious, which med schools are you applying to? I know you'll probably be applying to a BUNCH of them... but any notables? On the West coast?

My SO is currently in med school- for the first two years, she was hauling aroung a mac laptop in addition to several hefty textbooks. Not so much bulk- so it fit ok into a medium sized messenger bag, but it was a lot of weight, and did a number on her lower back.

This year she broke down and got some ortleib panneirs, which she's much happier with.
After seeing hers, i'm seriously considering getting a set of my own- it takes about 5 seconds to attach or detach them from the rack, they hold weight well, and they're totally waterproof.

Well, i'm no doctor but I do haul packages for a living. I can advise you on the proper bag needed for your particular situation. I think you'll have to meet me one-on-one for a private consultation.

its not only about the GPA.

I graduated at the top of my class but i could never slice open a cadaver or a living human! I get all queezy watching medical procedures on TV too. Plus i'm not so great with the whole science bit either.

so ya, there's much more to it.

Jdaher, you should ask salome, she's been a member for a good while and she's a med student.

what type of people become med students? do you gotta be enthusiastic, a good talker, good looking. can you be real and still get accepted?
or do med schools shy away from ppl who are too real.
do you gotta suck up to them?

you might consider a relatively new position - physician assistant

p.a. falls between an r.n. and general practitioner

high demand especially from hospitals/clinics(economical to insure) as opposed to physician groups(associate fees)

6 figure salary without the burden(responsibilities), and cost(legal hassle) associated with physicians

Hey, I'm a 2nd year going to med school in Milwaukee. I live about 3 miles away and commuted. In the begining, I hauled all my stuff back and forth thinking I was going to be studying some more once I got home. Now, I just leave all my stuff in my locker. I don't even touch a med text at home. I may spend more hours studying in school, but I leave all my work there and relax at home. So yeah, not a whole lot of haul'in. 'cept for my lunch + dinner. The cold was a far trickier thing to contend with. Forget about commuting by bike by 3rd year though. You do rotations all over the creation and a shirt and tie is required here.
