Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling - Leaving Tuesday

Well we're on our way Tuesday (we hope). From our home here in Illinois to Camarillo, CA. We'll be on two wheels...but those are under a Gold Wing. :p This is a round trip and will take about 16 days of riding and visiting.

While out in Camarillo my son and I will ride "bicycles" from Pt Magu to either Venice or Redondo beach via the Pacific Coast Highway. He has a spare bike I get to use. I'm sending a 170 crankset, (his are 172.5), my speedplays and all my riding gear in the mail, so it will all be there when we arrive (around Sunday).

We're going to have some time away from the rat race here at home.

Well, I'm back. It was a great trip of over 4,000 miles. While in Camarillo we did as planned and rode down the Pacific Coast Highway from Pt. Mugu. We only went to Venice Beach tho, my son got worn out :( after only 30 miles!! That was when the tailwind kicked in too. I was hard pressed to keep my pace slow enough so as not to leave him. While at Venice Beach we had a few biers outside of one of the pubs. We finished with 42 miles total. Not real long by my standards, but it had doubled the longest distance my son had ever ridden. pix are me on the Klein and him on the Specialized. The Fat lady was singing when we got to Venice beach. I'm the old guy in the pictures. :)

Here's another picture of us riding down the boardwalk of Venice Beach. I didn't realize we were not supposed to ride that part of Venice but it was something I have always wanted to do, so we did it anyway. No one bothered us, and we did ride ultra slow through it.

Seems most of the rides I go on might involve the partaking of at least one glass of brew, even here in the middle of Illinois. The cigar is reserved for very special times, riding through Venice Beach with my son qualified as such an event. Cigars are not usually on my menu. But it sure tasted good! :D

We came through your town of Joplin on the way home. I think we had lunch at one of your fine establishments there off of the freeway...McDonalds. If I recall the place had a race car theme?

My son was out this way for Christmas last year. While here I built that Klein up for him. It was also the bike I demanded to ride while visiting him and his better-half in Camarillo. I changed out the Crankset before I rode it...he uses a 172.5 set up where I am used to 170s. So I brought my own FSA crankset and speedplay pedals and off we went. It was certainly an easy ride, which made it a really good ride.

Yeah, I guess one could say that. He has really just gotten into riding since Christmas. He just sold the Specialized on Ebay. So he's back to one. Got to start somewhere. :)
