Mountain Biking - Just wondering??

hey Heres one for ya.
I have been lookin for a new frame and I fell in love with the Banshee Scream after looking at so many companies. All my friends think that i don't need something that big and that it's too heavy(which i am a little worried about). I have done 8 footers on my 02 Norco Rampage and 5-6 footers to flat. I have busted my rhyno lite rim in half already and striped my Hussfelt splined BB this summer. I need something bigger.
Just thought i'd see what some of you think. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

That bike is just about as burly as you can et without buying a Brooklyn. It wll hold up to 8 footers NO PROBLEM. I agree with your freidns though it is overkill unless you intend to go bigger. The bike is built for bigger drops and technical riding than what you currently do.

Ryno lits are crap and easy to brake so I wouldnt base purchasing a bike like that on those issues alone, I also found truvativ bb's to be lower quality to the raceface as I broke two before going to race face. So both of those parts breaking don't really mean you need THAT bike.

That said the bike is tough and hot and would be worth owning on those merrits alone. If I had the money I would buy that bike in a second. So I really shouldn't say anything. What are the trails like out east.Technical, big hits, tight etc...those plus how a bike feels under you should be your primary concern :D

Rhynolites are fine for XC and moderate freeriding 8 ft drops are outside what the rim was intended for. That's a LOT different than saying they're crap Mal. If they're that bad why the heck didn't you say something when I was getting the new ride? Hmmm?

out east we have some really nice tight rocky techniical downhills ( about 30 car drive from me) fun as hell but beat the crap out of my hardtail. As far as right where i'm at there is a little bit of everything. We have some nice little downhills with lots of roots and rocky terrain. there are tons of briges poping up everywhere. other than that we have a lot of tight single tracks but most of them are more flat with some small downhill sections. Oh and almost forgot we have some sweet gravel pits to play in ( 100- 150 hills with some sweet 5 foot to whatever u can handle dropins. We alsohave some good urban stuff in halifax ( stair gaps are a fave.) I wasn't too pleased with the ryhno lite for the kind of stuff i was doing. i have the intense mag 30's now and those seem to be holding up pretty good.

i could go for the Banshee Charpal which has 6 inchs of rear travel and keeps the same look as the scream. Although i would be supplemmenting lower weight for less strengh. I am planning on going as big as i can over the next summer hoping to work my way up to 10 to 15 footers.
However should i go for the air suspension or the coiled supsension. I have road other air supsensions and am not a big fan of the stiffness.

It would be roughly around the same price for the frame and i don't get the lx front derrailuer

:)..I have actually said that before. I have broken them doing general xc. I also didn't mention them to you because I remember you disagreeing with me in previous discussions about their quality ;)...so I didn't feel the need to rehash it with you.

I agree calling them crap was a little rude. But I have seriously had 0 luck with them. Same way I would call hayes mechs crap. They may work for some people but they really really sucked for me. :)

If you plan on going big then this bike will work fine for ya and won't be overkill. That and the bike is hot :)...there would be ways to save weight to since the bike is a bit of a beast and f you are even concerned about that...

Coil. I don't like air shocks on big hit bikes :)

Did you actually STRIP a splined BB?!?!!!?!? didn't know it was possible...

Didn't strip them...the splines were fine...destroyed the internals in both...they essentially seized...

Splined aren't industructable. I know a few riders who stripped them before. They are better than square but not bomb proof. :) (sometimes the damage is casued by poorly made crank arms :))

Ok. The Banshee Scream...

if you don't mind a bike that will *easily* touch the 45LB mark... than it's the bike for you.

Keep in mind that the frame *alone* weighs something like 12 pounds or something crazy.

The bike is an absolute BEAST.

If you wanna play rough, and still be able to ride trails... get a BigHit Comp like what I have. It still has XC roots left in it, and it;s SUPER durable.

the banshee might be a little over kill for 8 footers. Have you checked out the giant ac or kona stinky or santa cruz bullit?

That might be true but he will have a sick ride. Then if he ever gets the balls to do a 25 footer he will be just fine.

i'd choose the bike that screams "yes" after you ride it.
