I just saw this on ESPN....top prize of $50,000. My GOD!! Poker, Competetive Eating, Darts and now this?!? To loosely quote the chairman of this "sporting event"....."It's finnaly nice to have a sport where you can drink and have a cigarette while playing it. All you need is a hand and a dream."

It's not surprising that the US leads in low activity "sports". Won't be long before we see competitive TV watching.

ESPN's starting to make OLN (Versus) look more and more like a real sports network every day.

I just wish people would come to terms with the distinction between sports and competition. Poker, darts, billiards, eating, auto racing, etc - are not sports. Yes, I'm a touch cranky too, but who wouldn't be with 90-90 days forecast for the rest of the week.

What is truly sad, is that the networks find advertisers to pay for this crap. Yes, it does cost less to produce R-P-S than to broadcast, a cycling or tennis event, but who would watch it? A sad commentary indeed on our society.

LOL!!! I actually don't even know how to play that. It wasn't very popular in my neightbourhood when I was growing up. Now if there was a US Duck Duck Goose Championship, then you'd be talking!!:D :D

Hey, don't forget the finals of the Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee each year. Though, that's more of a one-off tradition that ESPN picked up to spotlight some insanely crazy spellers.

I've been on a long strin of crankiness.

I got no problem with RPS on ESPN, as long as they wear their helmuts. But what really ticks me off is when PRS newbies spend so much money on their first set of equipment just to get started, then don't keep playing the game. And then they look down their noses at the rest of us that didn't spend so much. I mean really, is carbon fiber really giving them any kind of an advantage as newbies?
Does any of them do any cross training for it like darts, sleight of hand, milk bottle cap flippin', sign language? Sign language intervals!
And this is something where the Asians really excel. Jun Ken Po. But there we go again, categorizing people!

If you have not seen the documentary Spellbound (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000WN13Q/sr=1-1/qid=1154360547/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-4237349-6019955?ie=UTF8&s=dvd), check it out. An excruciating/fascinating/engaging look into the world of the spelling bee.

It's a documentary from a few years back following 8 kids on their road to the finals in Washington. The pressure on them is amazing. Most seem glad once they miss a word that they are done with it once and for all.

However, I see no problem putting them on TV....let TV producers put what they think will bring viewers on.

I'd rather see more brainiac type competitions on TV, more spelling bees, math games, chess/backgammon tournaments, etc...

I'd call this rock paper scissors nonsense gay, but it would be an insult to my gay and lesbian friends.

I think its just a curiosity, or a change of pace from the typical football/soccer/baseball/basketball/tennis/golf on espn or whatever, your not gonna see year round coverage if there such a thing. Just like the world's strongest man compitition, its on once in a while, I'll watch a little, but thats about it...

I went to the World RPS championships in Toronto a few years back. I was out in the first round (lost my concentration), but my roommate was in the top 16.
