If you use FireFox on any platform, update to version 1.5.0.5 to fix (more) critical, exploitable vulnerabilities. Here's the download page for Mac, Linux and Windows: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
If you use Thunderbird, same story: http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/all.html
While you're at it, update your Flash Player to version 9, there was a massive exploit going down at MySpace recently that exploited vulnerabilities in Flash Player 8: http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer
Also uninstall your older version of QuickTime and get the latest version, to fix security vulnerabilities in QT: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
If you use Windows, run your system through the Windows Update site a few times until it's got all the Critical Updates installed: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com If you have any Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Visio, etc) then make sure to hit Office Update a few times too: http://officeupdate.microsoft.com
If you're a Mac user, use the Apple Update feature to make sure you're all up-to-speed too.
Lastly, if you use OpenOffice, guess what? Yep, that needs some security vulnerabilities fixed too! Get the latest version from http://www.openoffice.org
Also, if you have no antivirus software, or it's some relic from Long Ago, there's fairly good antivirus that's free for home use, such as AntiVir: http://www.free-av.com Make sure to go through the configuration panels and fully configure all the goodies (http://www.mechbgon.com/build/antivirus.html) so it's not running in Nerf mode.
Stay safe out there :)

- firefox should inform you automatically of an available update... i use KANOTIX64, an AMD64 Linux OS, along with OS X... both browsers updated over the weekend...
- guess i'll have to fire up NeoOffice/J under OS X and see if there's an update...
- tks to OP for the update on the updates...

What about me, I run Linux/Unix based platform most of the time?:DSame basic idea: Update your OS and your apps to eliminate known vulnerabilities. Disable unnecessary services.
firefox should inform you automatically of an available updateI happen to know that it does not do that if you're using a non-Admin account on Windows, which is the most sensible way to be operating web browsers. So people who've taken my repeated advice and switched to Limited or Restricted-User accounts for daily-driver purposes will want to bust out the Admin powers, uninstall the old version, and install the new one.
Yeah, and what can you do to prevent punk kids from messing with my abacus?Abacuses are difficult to really secure well against kids. Your best bet is to cause a deep-seated aversion to even TOUCHING an abacus or being seen near one. If you can somehow associate the abacus with an incredibly un-cool type of clothing, music, hairstyle... see what I'm saying? Make it the utter kiss of death to their peers' respect, like having an 8-track tape player in their car instead of a CD changer. :)

This is a pretty attractive feature....
[Bernard@localhost ~]$ su
Password:
[root@localhost Bernard]# yum update
I wish there was a flash player that I could upgrade beyond 7 though :(.
