Let me apologise humbly and sincerely... Firstly for the lame thread title above, secondly to all those who have listened to my crap in the past about "oh, I never let illness bother me when I decide to ride." Now that I actually know what illness is, I'm a little better informed now.
For those who aren't aware yet, I have basically been floored for the last four days with food poisoning. Today I actually managed to eat a proper meal for the first time since Thursday (it's Sunday now), and actually keep it down.
The point is this: right now I am feeling really run-down. I can't ever recall being so weak. Today I actually attempted a ride (a 2.5km return ride to the shops) and was huffing and puffing more than I would normally be after a 250km ride. I'm just wondering how long this will last, and if there's anything I can do to make it disappear quickly.
Once again - I am very sorry.

Hope you get well soon, Chris.
Well based on my own food poisoming exp once it is out of your system (which it should be) and you get back to normal eating habits you should experience nearly miraculous recovery and feel fine. One good day of regular meals should turn you around.

Yup - that was the case the one time I was zapped with food poisoning. Recovery will be fast and furious, Chris. Hang in there! :)
This sounds really icky but you might want to drink a bunch of sports drinks or pedialyte.
You lose alot of electrolytes when you, well, you know. So, not just eating regular, but replacing all the energy stores you lost would be a step in the right direction.
A friend of mine had this once and actually had to go to the emergency room and have an IV to get fluids back into her because she was so dehydrated.
Take care.
'Lytes were my first thought too. Electrolyte replacement is paramount. No first hand experience (admittedly) but I hear Pedialyte is superior to the various sports drinks. Hang in there this too will pass, er I mean it will, uh go away also.

I have used both during the summers and while it sounds weird (pedilite being for kids) it seems to be much better that gatorade or any other sports drink. somewhere I have a recipe fro making your own that i got from a dr in western kansas when my son was sick. It worked for him.
Plenty of rest is a great start. Go with a daily multi vitamin instead of a sports drink if you can, which ever is easier to obtain will work though. I would go easy on the riding for a week too. Go ahead and do some light, easy rides until next weekend if at all possible. Illness can get you more than you realize. Taking extra time to recover is a smart idea. Some light spinning may help in eliminating what ever is causing you to be sick. Just don't push yourself too early your may relapse due to the body not being recovered enough.
heya,
like everyone already said.. and as you know , this illness will take all your energy to get better.. thats' why you feel so weak.. aside from all the chuckups..:)
one thing that helped me recover faster when i had fp.. i had light chicken broth... then when the dizziness started to go.. i started having some plain rice.. not a lot but frequently.. as that stayed down i started adding some chicken.. etc. your dr. was right, it takes a few days to get your body balanced again.
oh yeah.... i drank flat warm gingerale too... but thats cuz i like it.... ewwwwwwwwww.
Chris, at the risk of sounding like a Mom, (well, I am one) this is the second time in a short period of time you have been sick or not up to your usual. Be very careful starting back, you may be more susceptible to problems than you normally are. Is there any chance you could be overtraining?

Leading up to this I wasn't training any more than at any time over the last three years or so. However you do raise a valid point, I'll take it easy when I start riding again (hopefully tomorrow).
Sorry your crook, take it easy cobber, a shot or two of brandy is great for gripe & Bombay- bum ,true ! kills all the nasties, take it easy & keep up the fluids & stay out of the sun for a bit & you,l be right. go for a quite ride when the sun goes down;)
get well soon
