hi everybody, I just purchased a 06 trek 6500. It was on sale for 450. I love the deore and xt componets and the frame is among the best. However, this years paint job is simply horrible. The 6500 non disc model is in this ridiculous orange color.
I'm thinking about taking it to a trek dealership and have them repaint it. Does anyone know how much this kind of procedure usually cost?
Or am i better off repainting it myself?

Thanks

You have a brand new bike and you already want to paint it? Geeze I could understand it if the paint was in horrible condition.

Well not specifically the orange and yellow duotone. The sunrise metallic is a bit different. But yea, I see what you're saying. Thing is his bike paint job is brand new. Mine has tons of scratches, dings, and imperfections =/

Learn to live with it. For the cost of repainting the frame, you could have just bought an $800+ bike in the colour you liked instead. Painting it yourself is difficult and takes a lot of time and know-how.

Just trade frames with Pheard. His is silver and black. Dang. I almost bought that bike BECAUSE of the color. You want a evaporated milk colored Kona? :p Click on "Half Squishy" below.

i think its worth taking it to a paint shop and seeing how much they would do it for, or a trek dealership for that matter.

if you wanna do it yourself its fairly easy. I stripped my bike down, sanded it with 100, 200, and then 400, put some metal primer on it, painted it 2 coats, and then a clear. then wet sanded with 1200. use aluminum oxide sandpaper, will make the paint stick much better.

it sounds like a lot, and i ride hard. but for the few days i got to stare at my masterpeice before i hit the mountain, it was worth it.

it'll last you years either way, as long as you take the time to sand and paint it right.

I would think you would need a spray mechanism & mask, as neither the stripping chemicals nor paint are good for you....

You can buy a cheap 3m respirator for about 25 bucks at homy de-pot and if you spray it right you can get away with spray paint you will just have alot more sanding to do. spray on the clearcoat and do alot more sanding then give it alot of time to dry correctly so it will be chip resistant. your almost better off stripping the frame of all its components, having it media blasted and dropping it off at an autobody place to have powdercoated. I was thinking of doing that with my old hardrock frame after I get the rockhopper built. I want to have it blasted polished then powdercoated clear so it just looks like polished aluminum :)

Check with chopper/custom motorcycle shops in the area. They can recommend someone to do powder coating if they don't do it themselves. Getting a frame powder coated if you disassembled it and strip it should be around $60 for a solid color. I know, I checked into having it done a couple of weeks ago to my diamond back before I went out and bought a new Trek.

+1 bro. you really don't 'need' a respirator theres really not that much to paint, but get one anyway. or at least wear a surgeon's mask. curtain off an area to avoid dust, and you're good to go. I've seen plently of rattle can paint jobs that look great. just remember, ITS ALL IN THE SANDING.
