Anything I need to be aware of when cutting carbon handlebars? Whats the best way to do it?

I'm used to flat bars, and the risers on my new singlespeed build make me feel like I'm getting ready to bear-hug somebody. I'd like to cut an inch or so off of them, and I'm just wondering how those of you with carbon bars have cut them. Thanks.

Use a BRAND NEW extra fine tooth blade. Wrap the area in masking tape to help reduce splinters. Score all the way around the bar. Use smooth strokes.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but: What do you mean be "score all the way around the bar?" Do you mean to cut in a little bit with the blade all the way around before making the actual cut? Or do you mean scoring with something else?

How do you make sure you make a straight cut? Do you use a guide of some sort?

Oh, and I'm assuming the best way to do this is with a hacksaw, right?

Yeah, use a hacksaw with a new blade. Cut all the way around so as you are cutting through you are cutting toward the center. Don't cut more that 1/2 through in other words. Rotate your cutting angle so the blade is always moving in toward the center, not pulling.

You can use a guide that park makes, that probably best, but if you are careful, you can freehand cut it.

I've heard people using dremel tools, but I've never attempted it.

Dremels are good, I love em for case modding, but those little cutting discs break so easily.

Use the steel reinforced diamond tipped ones :D Really expensive, but they never break.

Basically just reinforcing what a2 suggested...

GOOD QUESTION.

My new bars are carbon, but are wider than the hips on a Waffle House waitress!

Oh yeah? Well my bars are so wide, each of my grips resides in a different Area Code.

maybe a copper pipe cutter...cuts cleanly and slowly, making it less likely to splinter

Nah, the pipe cutter works with aluminum, but not carbon.

I've cut all my aluminum stuff with the pipe cutter, but with carbon, you need to "shear" the fibers.

+1 ive cut my carbon bars with a pipe cutter 2 times. don't recommend it, go with the table saw. messed up the pipe cutters both times.
