hey, so i am just starting to figure out my new to me vintage Basso fixed gear conversion. I've ordered some 165mm Shimano Sora cranks and matching bb, and I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to have to do to swap them with the Campy Centaur 175mm alloy cranks and the campy record bb that are on the bike now. Specifically, what tools will I need to remove the cranks and bb, and what will I need to put on the new ones? If I go to my LBS to have it done, how much would they likely charge?
...thanks for the help.

You'll need a lock ring tool, a spanner, a 14mm hex wrench (or a big allen key), some grease and a cup remover wrench. I think probably $15-$30 for an LBS to do it, depending on where you go.

And for you folks out there removing vintage Campy crankarm bolts, you'll need a 15mm THINWALL hex socket or tubing wrench/socket.

Take care,

if your basso is vintage, did you check to see if the BB is italian? and order the new one accordingly?

Hi Cyclotoine, I'm friends with yrbadluck, and we actually wrote sheldon brown for suggestions. He was the one originally suggested swapping out the bb, too. That's a good question, but isn't it a given the bb is italian? How can we check?

BTW, this bike is really pretty. Soon as I saw it, I was jealous.

I am just unsure about the vintage designation because the cranks are centaur. Since I don't know anything about modern bikes especially Italian I don't know if they still use italian threading or have switched to english. Anybody? Can you answer this? Anyway, perhaps the centaur cranks were an update? Either way the old BB should state the threading right on the side once you have removed the cranks... it will say either English: '1.370" x 24 TPI' or Italian: '36 x 24 F'... but It is most likely italian. Italian BB shells are slightly larger in diameter with a slightly different thread pitch and 70mm wide as opposed to 68mm (english). If you go WAY back I think things get even funkier.
