Classic & Vintage - 5 speed without a freewheel?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. A bike left out for garbage that looks to be in great shape... lightweight Olmo.
The wheels are Nisi Montcalieri alloy tubulars. The back has a 14-22 5 speed, but it doesn't appear to freewheel. Did bikes use to have 5 speeds without freewheels? or is it more likely to be rusted closed?

P.S. Looking through the wheel to the back of the gears, it does appear as though there is a rotating connection that might be supposed to spin inside the outside cylinder... but I'm not positive what to look for.

Put some oil in it through the front and maybe you can free it up. If not, freewheels aren't expensive.

if you have the tools take it off then sock the penetrating oil too it, liqid wrench preferred. once you free it up spin it and let it dry out. Then soak it in heavy gear oil or go to a shop with a grease injector for freewheels. Or just replace it.
If you can't free it up, I have a 14-22 Regina freewheel that would be perfect on that bike; yours for postage.

I've been spraying it with a lot of wd-40, and occasionally leaking in some 3in1 oil. The axle spins fairly free. But even pulling pretty hard with a hammer on the cogs, they don't budge at all. (I don't have tools to take it off, yet.)
ty Top, the lockring on this one says Regina -- G. Scorcese ... will let you know in a couple of days.

I've only see those schwinns that had a 5speed with out the freewheel in the rear---the freewheel was in the BB.

Its alive!
seems to spin ok now. Spraying wd40 in the lockring area every 30 minutes, seems to have worked after 3-4 hours.
Good find. Now post a picture.
