General Cycling Discussion - New colors / Layout

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I haven't changed much, but the site needed something new, I got rid of some of the text (Subscribe | New thread | Read new) text on the main page, and replaced them with icons. This actually should make the page load a bit faster, but not by much, only dropped 3K in size.
I also changed a few colors, mainly the light grey and dark grey to light blue, and lighter blue :) With the color change, I changed the icons to match the new layout, a lighter background.
I have also changed a few forums, I moved all threads in the Bike Messengers forum to the Open Discussion forum. I have also moved the racing forum to a sub forum of the Road cycling forum.
Im also looking to add a few more sub-forums to the current forums, i.e., a Down Hill / DS, Single Speed to the mountain biking forum. A travelogue sub forum to the Touring forum, and a new Online journal forum for those who would like to keep an online journal of there cycling adventures (blatantly stolen from Jon's Bike-A-Log (http://pages.prodigy.net/jonrutherford/bike-a-log.html), thanks Jon!).
If you have any thoughts / ideas for the site, please, let me know!
I hope you like it, possibly look for a new logo next week, or sooner!
Hey Joe,
Great work on the site!Keep it up!
Andre
I'd like to see who's currently online, at the top of the home page instead of the bottom. I always have to scroll (page) down to see it, and I always want to know....
Re: logo, I like the elliptical one you showed us last week, but would prefer not to have the straight edges on top and bottom (as I already said). The only other thing that comes to mind would be a bike wheel for the letter "o" in "Forums," which I think would be cute but maybe too cute for some. (Or maybe not! Look how popular the cute smileys are! ;) :) :D :p )
Re: online diaries--I've seldom been stolen from (knocks on wood) but having the Bike-A-Log "stolen" sure feels better than when somebody liberated my Gitane those years ago! :D I hope lots of people will want to share their daily miseries, triumphs, and boredom....

Good ideas jon, moving the active users to the top is easy to do. Im still working on a new logo. i too dont like the stright edge on the top / bottom, but im not much of a graphics person :)

Thank you fubar :)
I have also just added a cool little feature, when in a forum, click on the Replies number, and you will get a small pop-up box with who posted in that tread, and how many times. Its a neat little feature, fun to play with.

Now, these new colors would look good on a jersey!

Servus!
I have to be brutally honest here- I don't like the colors. When Joe tweaks the functionality (there's an IT word...) the site just keeps getting better. But the colors reminded me of something and it hit me last night after my shower but I think I'll hold my tongue on that revelation.
Kudoes to you Joe for making the site work infinitely better, colors need a change in my opinion.

I bet I know what the colors reminded Ranger of. But I won't say, either, lest I give away the secret. Besides, I could be wrong! :D

Joe,
Everything looks great, except....I like the date better when the month was written out. I know, I know... I am just nit picking.
Joe, did you change the size(width) of the website? It doesn't fit inside my screen anymore, I have to scroll over.

Fubar, i didnt, i just changed the colors / buttons, and front page layout. Do you need to scroll right on all pages, or just some pages? and what resolution do you run? 800 x 600?
For the record, nothing changed width-wise for me. I have 1024x768 resolution and am using IE 5.5.
Fubar, what browser are you using? Could this be something that affected Netscape and not IE, as so often happens?
I use internet explorer. I think my dads computer is messed up, because here at work it is fine.

Fubar,
Check his display settings, a 1024x768 resolution is pretty much standard these days.
Hi Joe,
Site looks great..just one point I noticed..when you enter a forum with new replies, they aren't always at the top where they used to be.
They seem to be appearing two or three 'old' posts down.
Not really a problem, just a pointer :D
Cheers

Rich, theres a few posts with the word "Read" infront of the post, these are posts that are stuck to the top of the forum, currently the "Who are you?" thread, and the "One of our unicyling guy passed away." thread. Everything else is the exact same, shouldnt have any problems.
Joe,
As usual you are doing a great job!
JonR said he would like to see who is currently online at the top of the page.
Maybe I'm the only uninformed person here, but I have never seen the "who's online" information listed anywhere. Where do I look? Thanks.

It's at the bottom of the home page, requiring tedious tiresome troublesome manipulation of the scroll bar or page down key! When it's at the top of the page, life will be perfect! (For five minutes.):D

Joe - just checked out the Bicycle Exchange site. Pretty complete, I'll have to go back when I get more time. They have a good listing of biking books, you were interested in that a couple of months back.

Dave, i love the Bicycle Exchange site, the webmaster is a great guy. I purchased some pearl izumi gloves from there classifieds, would have paid $25 at the LBS, got them used (3hrs, too big) for $12 shipped! :)
