Fifty Plus (50+) - Just Signed Up for NYC Century

Yep, went ahead and did it. Probably only going to do the 55 mile though. We have decided to make a weekend out of it going down on the Sat and staying until Mon. I can't wait to ride over the Brooklyn Bridge, what a rush!

Hey, in what other hobby can you spend $500 for hotels, $90 in reg fees, $80 in gas, add in food, and the end result is a sore ass and a T-shirt, gotta love it :D

Wish I could do it but I know it's not possible this year. I've only been back on the bike for three months and do about 8-9 miles per night with average speed of about 12 mph. It's something to shoot for though...maybe next year.

have you done it before? it's a great event and surprisingly scenic for being in NYC. you'll ride along waterfronts, through parks, etc. of course, you can't completely get away from traffic but it's usually pretty tame.

SemperFi - I also have just started riding this year and my longest ride yet has been 56 miles. My nightly rides are about the same as yours and I try to do 30-50 on weekends. There are 15, 35, 55, 75, and 100 mile distances. Try one of the shorter ones, it should be a blast.

don't know the hotel, but the location will be great for you. it's not far from the start\finish line. that will be really nice since you can just ride over in the morning.

Google it...you should find all the info you need. Never heard of it myself but I agree with timmhaan that the location is perfect.

If this is anything like the London to Brighton we have over here. It will be one of two rides. Get an early start and you can get a good clean run. Start a couple of hours later and you will be walking up the slopes- Not your fault but All those other riders blocking the road as the legs don't work after 5 miles.

The buzz from a ride such as this is phenominal. I don't know if I prefer the early start or a later one. In fact the ride is not really for me- but I do seem to get roped in every couple of years to help one or other of my customers for their first long ride.

Gonna need pics of this so don't forget the camera. Incidentally- All riders look the same in a crowd- One of my group this year had a couple of Ears attached to his helmet- I could pick him out amongst all the other riders.

No. The Five Boroughs ride is in May. 42 miles and they close the streets for us. Mass start. Over 30,000 riders participated this year.
The NY Century should get around 5,000, staggered start by distance and they don't close the streets.

Years ago, probably during the Eisenhower administration, I actually rode the Ensenada - Rosarita 50 mile ride in Mexico. Truth be told, it was in the early 80's I believe.

Anyway, even back then, there were 8,000 riders. I was shocked that when the gun went off at 8 a.m. and I didn't even reach the starting line until 8:20. First and only time I've ridden with that many people.

The media kept saying the NY5B Tour had "more than 30,000". Didn't hear an official number for 2006. I registered weeks early and was number 34100ish. I saw vest numbers up into the 64,000's and I heard that they ran out of vests and were giving out slips of paper. If everyone showed up, that would put our actual number around 70,000.
