I am tall and skinny and found that drinking whey protein, even though nasty, helps my overall physique. One day something clicked in my head and I just can't do it anymore. It is too nasty to drink. Anyone else hate the stuff and learned to choke it down? What are your secrets for making it taste good?

I can't seem to hide the taste in milk or shakes it just make more of it to drink.

i don't know, i love it. some people swear they can taste the "powder" but i say F them haha. don't just mix it with a spoon or shake it. i think it is horrible like that. but use a blender, it takes less time, you can make more and save for later if need be, and you can throw anything you want in it.... bananas, cherries, blueberries, apples, kittens, whatever floats your boat. try using fruit juices(all natural stuff), milk, water, green tea, anything it takes to make it taste good to you.

i just discovered the chocolate version, a cup of skim milk, 2 scoops chocolate whey after a hard ride, 1 scoop after a moderate. throw in a banana, push GRIND for 15 seconds, then MIX, add 4 ice cubes, push ICE CRUSH. ...voila, milkshake that tastes better then mcdonalds, and at most 350calories, at least 200 calories, depending what you add. mm mm good i just finished one in fact, and got a brain freeze.. doh

The blender tip is the best thing going. If you're simply stirring it to mix it, you will end up with those nasty little chunks. Less so with shaking. However, a blender like those magic bullet things on TV make it nice and creamy.

You can also mix in less water/milk into it and have it be just a bit thicker (blender ONLY!). It goes down in a 3 gulps.

I don't really like it just mixed into milk or water, but I've found it's nearly tasteless, actually taste-enhancing, when mixed into oatmeal. I use either plain or vanilla flavored. It's OK. Soy protein powder, on the other hand.....blecchh! I also do the fruit + whey + blender thing. Some sorbet or nonfat frozen yogurt would probably improve things as well.

I mix about 44 grams of whey protein
with 3 cups of skim milk and add some
psyillium husk for FIBER. I sometimes
use Orange flavored Metamucile, or plain
and add flavorings like MINT LEAVES, or
cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger powder or anise
or all spice and enjoy it that way. I find it
satisfying and it keeps me trim and fit with
lean muscle mass. I eat to live. Not live to eat.

And yet, a couple of times a week, now that I
am in maintenance I can go out and have a
giant double burger or mexican food or a
steak with baked potato, veggies and garlic bread.

For me, whey protein is the secret to me staying
trim and fit for the rest of my life and after 30 years
of yo-yo dieting, I am grateful for the stuff and find
the taste, JUST RIGHT! See http://www.wheyoflife.org
for details on all the many, many health benefits of
this great food source.

me too. although, if you're thin like myself and ride everyday, real food gets real expensive after a while. food is one of my favorite things in life, but it sucks being hungry every 2 hours all day long. so, it makes sense to supplement your diet. it's cheaper\easier in the long run.

I don't agree, but that's cool. This is why we get to live our own lives.

I like the EAS Myoplex Deluxe Vanilla flavor and whatever fruit you feel like putting in there.

But the blender is key!!

Do you find that different brands of whey taste better or worse. I have always tried GNC brands due to availability, but several online claim to be "the best tasting or your money back."

Yaa blend with fruit. Also you could try soy protein, (and isn't there another one?/?)

I partially answered your question on another post. However, I have a question:
How many have you tried?

I understand where you’re coming from. I once tried a protein powder call HOT STUFF. I finally dumped it. I could not handle the taste.

The best tasting protein power, from the ones that I have tried is:

GROW! Whey: http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=1067084

However consider a mixed protein, like a milk (Whey and Micellar Casein)
or Whey, casein and egg.

Again, the flavor masking technology they this company uses is pretty good. Try Metabolic Drive:

(Even my son drinks it.)

After my morning ride I refill my water bottle with water add the chocolate whey and shake. As I download my workout I drink it clumps and all. Does it taste good...Nope. If I wanted to make something that "taste good" I would pull out my blender, chop fruit, add all ingrediants, blend, pour, drink and then clean up my mess. I'd rather choke it down than deal with all the mess. I save the blender for mixing adult beverages and the fruit for myceral and snacks.

Cmon be a man...choke it down...

Hmmm, I am fat and hungry every two hours. Now that sucks. :)

What makes you think whey is not real?

Here is a quote about one of the more popular whey protein supplements:

Like its predecessors, this canister of ON 100% Whey Gold Standard contains Optimum Nutrition's exclusive, proprietary blend of...

* Microfiltered Whey Protein Isolates
* Ion-Exchange Whey Protein Isolates
* Ultrafiltered Whey Protein Concentrate
* HydroWhey Hydrolyzed Whey Peptides

I don't know what any of those things are.

So your lack of knowledge makes it unreal?

Do you know that whey is a natural component of milk? Have you ever heard of Little Miss Muffet and her tuffet?

Multi-syllabic words do not necessarily indicate "fake" foods. Spend a little time reading and researching. You will see that a lot of what you quoted is just marketing jargon but not necessarily anything harmful. Whey is pretty tame compared to additives and preservatives in many other foods you probably consider "real".

This is the only one I've ever tried, and it tastes good. Natural vanilla flavor sweetened with fruit.

Been using it for about 2 months now with a dramatic effect on overall health, strength, and weight loss.

Rather than compare notes on how much research that we've done and how well read we are, let me just say this..

Yes, Mr. Smart Guy, I do know that whey is a natural component of milk. Thank you for the revelation. Did you know that sodium and chloride are parts of salt? Perhaps you should supplement with them individually?

Look, I'm just of the opinon that if your body needs whey protein, it will be readily available in nature. But it's something that has to be extracted from whey, which has to be extracted from milk, so I don't believe that my body needs it.

I apologize to the original poster for hijacking his thread. To each his own. Try to find a way to "choke down" that whey protein.

I been taking whey 3 times a day as a protein supplement the past week to help a surgical wound heal. I have been blending GNC's vanilla flavored whey with near frozen skim milk and a teaspoon of chocolate syrup. It isn't too bad, tastes kinda like a chocolate Yoo Hoo.

You basically hit the nail on the head. You will have to try different brands and figure out which one you like. Some recommendations have been posted. But chocking down a whey protein shake day after day just isn’t worth it.

Try this:

1 scoop Optimum Nutrition natural vanilla or natural chocolate
1 Banana
2/3 water, 1/3 vanilla soy milk
5g Creatine (optional)
a few ice cubes

Toss the ingredients into a big glass, leaving out some water or soy milk. Get out the hand blender and mix it up for 15 seconds. Rinse off blender end for 10 seconds for easy cleanup. Top off with more water/milk. Chug. mmmmmmm good! Whole process takes less than 5 minutes, is easy to clean and very tasty. Here is where I get my protein: http://www.nutritionexpress.com/protein/whey_protein/optimum_nutrition_100_whey_gold_standard_natural_vanilla_5.11_pounds.aspx

Hi,
I know what you mean. Fortunately, you don't have to. I get milk protein from
these guys because it's cheap.
http://proteinfactory.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=22_28&products_id=50

I blend it up in soy milk. My breakfast is a fruit shake with fresh and frozen fruit
in the milk/soy blend. For a recovery drink I might blend in chocolate syrup insted of fruit. There are a hundred different ways you can go. Someone already mentioned mocha.

You will find milk protein to be like... milk.

Now, let's look at alternatives. There is a skim milk at the supermarket
that has 10 grams of protein per cup instead of 8. I like it. Then there are egg whites. No fat, and very high quality protein. I often spray some Pam into a pan, cook up some Eggbeaters. While that's cooking I toast some bread. I take 2 slices of no-fat cheese and put one on each side with the egg in the middle.
It's actually pretty good.

It' not hard getting protein into your diet. And it doesn't have to taste bad.

I found the solution: Chocolate MyoPro!

It does not have the bitter aftertaste of GNC brands and the texture is very palletable. I have been mixing it in a bottle and shaking it and it is great. I almost like it.

my 2 favorite shakes (and I can never taste the whey, I use American sports nutrition vanilla and chocolate)

Strawberry Jelly:
Half blender full of ice
1 medium size banana
1/3 cup pineapple
1/3 cup coconut milk
1/3 to 1/2 cup strawberries
1/3 cup ice milk (or regular milk, water)
1 or 2 scoops vanilla protein

Ice milk makes everything taste good !!!

The same shake without the strawberries taste really good to. I also add and take away things to mix em up like blue berries, peaches, pears, etc.

Reese's Pieces:
Half blender of ice
2-3 tablespoons of peanut butter
Ice milk or some type of milk
1 or 2 scoops of chocolate protein

I add benefiber most of the time and cant taste it either. after hard rides and before my shake I mix some flax seed oil with a glass of grape juice (grape juice will mask alot of flavours)

I used to mix my protein drink with a chocolate shake. As long as you drink the whole shake, it works like a charm.

The thought of real food is great, but I find that after a sustained effort I just cannot tolerate solid food for a few hours. But I also know that I should get some carbs and protein in pretty quickly to improve my recovery. I'm not a big chocolate or milk fan. To my mind, that means using whey or soy protein in some drink. I like the suggestions for protein powder in with juice. I think my stomach could probably handle that until my hunger for real food finally kicks in.

I like userOne's Reese's Pieces formula. It's roughly what I sometimes use for my breakfast.

edit: I throw a 1/2 cup of oats in too.
