I hope that i'm posting this in the right place...

anyone know anything about gnutti hubs? the hubs don't say anything on them, but the quick releases say "gnutti made in italy" on them. i've got a pair of them on some 27" wheels, and i'm thinking of building some wheels for a friend. nothing crazy, he just needs some wheels. Are they worth keeping, or should i just start fresh?

*edit* i don't want to use the original wheels because the rims have these grooves runniong perpendicular to the circumference of the rim that cause horrible squeals whenever you break. and no, it's not from brakes not being toed in. it's definitely the rims.

They're nothing special, just Italian bike boom stuff. But if they are in good shape, with no pitting on the races or cones, you should be able to clean them up and get reasonable performance out of them. If they've been abused, run dry, etc. I would not waste a lot of time on them.

When I started racing in the early 1950s I used Gnutti hubs and Gnutti steel chainset. I seem to remember the chain rings were interchangeable with Simplex rings. It was one of the best makes available at that time. There is some info here: http://www.classicrendezvous.com/Italy/Gnutti_main.htm
