How Come Entry Fees Are So High?

I was interested in doing a 'cross race (and seeing how my Axis performs) and there was one advertised at the LBS and the entry fee is $40!!!:eek: I was so shocked I really didn't get any other details about it or whether it was UCI sanctioned or not.

I haven't raced in about six or seven years or something like that but good grief that's expensive, more than double what I paid racing C class. Supposidly it includes lunch but whoop-de-do, I'll bring my own. Are all the entry fees now this high? This priced me out of the market.:(

$40 is actually pretty reasonable compared to some of the races and rides i've seen...i was going to do a centruy with my company team and they wanted over $100...i didn't do it because i couldn't warrent spending that much money on something i can do for free

That is a little pricey. Most races are $23-30 depending on who puts it on.

Everyone has their hands out. I pretty much stopped doing organized Centuries and most especially charity rides. On MS rides you're expected to raise a great deal of money and as someone else pointed out, many of these also have exorbitant entry fees besides that.

The road is more or less free so I do my own rides unless friends absolutely can't do without a particular Century.

As for racing fees? Actually those are somewhat reasonable. Everyone is holding their hands out these days and the clubs that put on the races want to pay the parks for use (there really IS a lot of landscaping damage from CX) and put something in the bank as well.

I can justify $40 for a CX race a great deal easier than $100 for a Century which uses public roads.
