Well, the inevitable has finally happened. I guess since some of the new has worn off, Rainbabe has exiled Yorick to the garage. I had to break it to him gently. This weekend I did some PM on him and left him in the garage Saturday night. I explained that it would just be easier, since I had more grooming to do Sunday - repack bearings, put on brand new tires (he liked the idea of fancy new tires). Then I broke it to him Sunday that the garage would be his new home. Fortunately, "...he is a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy: he hath borne me on his back a thousand times..." Yorick, always the optimist, found a bright side: going from the air conditioned house to warm, moist air outside, and the opposite in winter, could cause condensation. This way he will be acclimated. Besides, my daughters are always waking him up when the come in at all hours. The garage is more peaceful. Heck, he almost has me convinced to move out there!

Rainman

Let me guess...
It was You...or Yorick, right? ;)

Let me save you the next ugly step and just suggest you move into the garage now.

You see, now that Yorick is an "outside bike" rather than an "inside bike", it will no longer be welcome inside. For example, say it's winter and you need to do some maintanance. You decide to bring it into the kitchen, spread some newspaper on the floors and get crackin'. "What's that thing doing in here?!" your wife will demand. You respond in kind, "Oh, honey, my fingers get cold outside holding onto the steel tools". She will then give you the old 'you're going to eventually pay for this' voice with the words, "Well, do you have to do it HERE??"

We are the middle level managers of our own lives - caught in the middle of the faithful who serve us and the demands from above us: We ride our bikes and our wives ride us.

How about tonight you put Yorick in bed with the wife and you set up camp in the garage. Who needs A/C anyways?

Too bad they don't have basements in New Orleans. My corner of the basement is called the dungeon. Kind of like Frankenstein's laborotory without the lightning.

Actually, a few homes do have basements, but after Tropical Storm Allison they are now called indoor swimming pools. Nah, nobody has real basements. Our water table is about two feet below ground so any hole immediately becomes a pond.

Yorick is dealing with his exile better than I. It was so easy before - turn on the light, top off the tires, check for necessary gear, step out the door, lock it and go. Now I have to do all that stuff outside under outdoor lights, go in and out of the house to get stuff I might have forgotten, go BACK through the house to lock everything up, walk around back and get Yorick. Yorick, on the other hand voiced no complaints. Or maybe he's just not speaking to me. But I could hear him purring over his new Brooks saddle, new tires and freshly greased balls.

I am glad to hear Yorick is doing good. My less expensive bike, Olga, has and always will be an outdoor bike. She is 7 years old and has spent at least half of her life in the back yard. She is currently residing under the large oak tree, locked up to the clothes line. Due to the small amount of space my house offers, there is only room for my good (sorry, Olga) bike. But, I don't feel too bad for her, because I know when I am work (with the good bike) she is back in the yard under the shade tree playing with birds and running with the squirrels.

You have what seems to be a very good bike... so why on earth do you also need a wife?

You realize, of course, Cambronne, that I won't EVEN go there! I am just glad to have Yorick for male companionship. I have a wife and three daughters plus every pet we have ever owned has been female until my daughter brought home a tiny male kitten who bonded with me. He is a holy terror, though. Good old Yorick is dependable and true. You can't blame him for punctures and broken spokes. But he also knows that Rainbabe and the Raingirls are my first loves. He is a true and understanding friend.

My wife (whom I will not refer to as Hogbabe, by the way) was out of town last week so of course both the dog and the bicycle got to spend lots more time in the house. I appreciated both the company and the convenience.

Still, I think there's still a chance that she'll let them stay inside if they both get a bath...

My bike is very lucky, she has her own condo, one bedroom and den.My brother-in-law owns an apartment in the same building as my wife and i but he works in the states so he only comes home once or twice a year.
I have all my commuting things there and i even sleep there when i'm working day shift because i get up at 4:30 in order to make it to work by 7:00.

HogWild,
You are correct sir! Referring to the spousal unit as HogBabe would definitely be injudicious. Now WildBabe has a certain ring to it and I don't see how any young lady could take exception to that! :)

Hmmmmmm. I may have to re-think my brides nick name. Besides riding a bike, I also shoot black powder rifles...and I have referred to the little lady as Buffalo Woman! Think she might object??

Bill,
That moniker might take some, uh, "tweaking". I don't think Possibles Bag would work too well either. Besides, if you start using black powder references, she might start calling you Flash in the Pan. :)
