When I pedal I have a faint (but severely annoying) grinding sound coming from the bottom bracket. I hypothesize that a bit of dirt has gotten into or around the bottom bracket and is making the noise. What's the best way of cleaning around the bottom bracket to remove dirt of this sort??

First off, it's not the bottom braket.
Your chain/ cogs/chainrings need to be cleaned.

Wow. I was planning on cleaning the chain/cogrings after today's ride. I usually clean them after every ride, but they are a bit dirty now that I think about it. Thanks for the knowledge!!

Just wanted to say thanks again........it was exactly what you said. Cleaned the bike up and abracadabra.....no more grinding noise.
