Foo - Home bathroom scales are crap

I've decided that floor scales that you get for your bathroom are crap, especially cheap ones.

This morning I hopped on and it said "160.0". I was like, "Heh, I WISH". Slid it to another tile and hopped on it again. Same reading. Slid it to another, 190.5. That's (unfortunately) more like it.

Sometimes you can get 3 different weights. And we have another one down in the kitchen that never agrees with the one in the bathroom. I feel like I need to weigh myself 3x on each one and average it.

Do you use the digital or the kinds they use at the grocery store to measure fruit?

I have this one, it seems to work pretty well and consistently.

That's typical of most cheap floor scales.

My favorite is the old beam scales like they have at the Dr's office. I got one for five bucks at a yard sale. It matches my Dr's to the ounce!

I wish I could find one of those.

I have two digital ones too, One I use upstairs if I want to weight 121 and one I use downstairs if I want to weight 118:p

My cheapo bathroom scale is accurate to a pound or two when compared to a doctors scale.

As long as the scale is repeatable it doesn't matter. You can tell if you are gainibg, loosing, or staying the same. I like the beam scales, but even these seem to disagree; every time the gym gets a new one it reads 8 to 10 pounds more than the last one. So get one that is self consistant and stick with it.

How cheap is cheap? I have a Tanita digital scale w/body fat that I paid like $60 for a couple years ago, and it's been fairly reliable...

Whatever made you believe they were of qaulity? Even a good scale is only as accurate as its calibration. One good bump and that could be gone. Also the surface a scale is on affects the accuracy. :D

That's what I would have thought, but the ones (this has happened 3 times in the last 4 years) at the gym were zeroed when I used them on friday. Monday I first noticed that I was 8 to 10 pounds heaver. Then realized it was (another) new scale. Now that I've lost back down to what the last one read in December I guess they will be gettiing another. :)

It's because gravity is variable.

It always seems to be strongest when I'm standing on a scale (or climbing). :p

Ah, but beam scales truely measure mass, not weight (the force produced as a result of gravity) - so even if gravity were variable, beam scales wouldn't show it.
