DWOLA = different way of looking at

milage goals are great, but i contend that the challenge should be worded in hours in the saddle, not miles.
if someone has 2 hrs in the morning to workout, and one rides along at 15 mph (terrain, traffic, fitness) and another is a racer, who goes all out at 20+ mph....then over time, the racer's miles are given greater weight.
lance always said that he trains and wins races in a prescribed time (given a set distance)

my goals for year should be 200 hrs of saddle time. that means that i am not a slave to the miles and my ride around the block with my 5 yr old can be given just as much importance as my all out efforts.

***note: fubar's thread doesn't bother me and i wish i had time to begin to reach these goals. i am rooting for each one trying to make it. just weighed in with another way of looking at it***

In the long run it is probably more important. I still ride because my dad used to take me out for rides as I grew up. More like 14 than 5, but the point is that a family bond is worth more to most of us than a few extra hours in the saddle.

I set mileage goals. But when it actually comes down to riding, I look at how much time I have until my next commitment (or until it's going to get dark if I'm without lights) and I go for that amount of time. My average miles per hour is pretty much the same, depending on the bike I'm riding. So I pretty much know how many miles I'll get in given an amount of time. So for me, a mileage goals pretty much equates to a time goal since my speed is almost always the same. I have noticed I am slowly (ever so slowly) getting a bit faster, but not by any leaps and bounds. So for this 1000 miles goal, I know I need to put in about 71.5 hours.

I do agree with you riphraph, a time goal is a great way to do things, but miles just sound better. :)
