How to get faster?
Lose weight?
Do hill repeats?
Ride lots?
Ride more?
Spin?
Mash?
Stand?
Insights please.
Our NE Brevets are chock full of climbing. The 600k was designed with 20,000 feet.
I live in VT, so I've got the hills, and the gradients.
(Did a nice loop this weekend - 70 miles and 7500 feet of climbing over 2 gaps, gradients going to 18 and 20% on the final pitch. 3 gents floated passed me as if I were standing still going through a switchback... I was sitting in 34x26 or 27 grinning as I approached the top - but wondering how they do it!!)
I love going uphill - even if its a struggle - and I don't mind doing the work to get better - and I want to focus through the fall and winter so I come out next spring in much better climbing shape.
My stats:
175 pounds with an upper body that doesn't really fit the cyclists mold (lose that? how?)
I ride a compact and spin and stand - I like to change it up
I run a bit - and am planning on adding more to the mix
I've been shedding weight over the last 3 years and improving my cycling - on club rides I'm in the "AA" group - "Always Alone" - usually dropped from the A group (accomplished racers) - but well out ahead of the "B" group. I've got 3 years of what I'd call "serious" base, with this past winter being my strongest to commit to the trainer / weight loss / core training / etc.
I know Machka was looking at improving her climbing for BMB, and spokenword and I discussed climbing on the 600k... just wondering what everyone else does - and how it affects your training / riding / fun time - especially if the goal is to do this repeatedly for 1200k...
