My current frame is spaced out at 126 mm in the rear. I read somewhere that the Shimano 600 8 speed hubs, which are spaced at 130 mm, have 4mm spacers on the axels. Remove one spacer and redish and you have a 126 mm spaced 8-speed rear hub. Can anyone here confirm if this is true or not?

Also, if true, what kind of problems would this pose for shifting? I can't really think of any.

I know I can just stretch the rear triangle, but I want to know what all my options are.

I don't believe that is true. If it was, it wouldn't cause shifting problems, but it would create a VERY weak and unreliable wheel due to the excessive dishing that would be required.

Re-spacing the frame is the correct way to do this. It's safe and easy with steel frames.

Looking at the exploded view of the current 6600 Ultegra hub http://bike.shimano.com/media/cycling/techdocs/en/bikecomponents/FH/EV-FH-6600-2348_v1_m56577569830538031.pdf there is a 4.8mm axle spacer on the left side. I don't know if all Ultegra/600 hubs have these. I had a 6400 rear hub that did, though, and I believe my current 6500 rear hub does, too.

I've done the opposite - spaced a 126mm rear hub out to 130mm by adding a 4mm spacer on the non-drive side to build a pair of sturdy road wheels for my MTB. But I don't know if I would trust a wheel with extra dish.
