I was searching through my stock photo discs, hoping to find a particular type of bicycling photo. There was no biking category, so I dug through several different sections. Just thought you might enjoy seeing some of what I DID come across....

I believe this is what is called a railbike....

Those bicycle cab things are used in Surfers Paradise during the tourist season. I was going to get a job "driving" one a few years back, except that the owner (typical Gold Coast tourism operator) was a total jerk who liked ripping people off.

Thanks for the pics, Inkwolf! :)

Seeing the picture of the cuban cyclists reminds me of a story by Dave Eggers that appeared in Time magazine. Eggers, the author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, wrote a great travel article about a trip to Cuba. He mentioned that one year in the not too distant past, China shipped an aid package to Cuba in the form of one million bicycles. I wonder if the bikes in the picture were from that shipment.

Since we are sharing pictures...

I spent last summer in europe. Here's a picture of a bicycle in Amsterdam. The building in the background is a parking garage for bicycles.

I was in Beijing China two years ago - it was INSANE how many bikes were in that city. The city population is something like 13 million people (in ONE city!)...and there are reportedly like 9 million bikes in the city!
The vast majority are Giant brand bikes...though nothing like what you'd find at your local Giant dealer.

Here's a pic from the trip:

I wish I'd take more pics of all the bikes...

Oh yeah, central station, the city council was sick of all those abandoned bikes so they build a shed and did a huge cleaning of the station area, what a waste of bikes.....

Bac, nice pics...but I think you need to modify your exposure time...they're moving too quickly for your camera!

Personally I would never pay to ride in one of those bike-cabs. I have a rule that if I spend money on bike-anything, I better have the priviledge of doing the pedalling. |8^) A friend of mine mentioned to me that during the summers in her town, they had opportunities for bicycle-icecream carts. Now that would be an awesome job. |8^)

Hearing the news of terrible winter weather back east and in the midwest, I was wondering how common this kind of cycling is in ice-bound parts of the country:

bentrox,

That bike with the skate blade for a front end looks like it might be kinda fun! (I'll bet its a little un-nerving the first time though!)
Have you ridden it before?

Cipher,

I've no bike experience on ice at all (I'm in sunny California.) I found this pic on a framebuilder's site and was just wondering if someone like yourself (i.e., from Minnesota) had ever seen or ridden a front-fork bladed bike like this. Must be fun on the straight-away, but a ***** to turn!

Maybe I should've posted it under the Winter Biking forum.

bentrox,
I saw CA for your location, but just figured you were not telling us the whole story. :D I know they do oval racing on ice here with cars, and motorcycles, (I've see the motorcycles, tires w/some nice sharp spikes!) and have a friend who use to race professionally that would ride his mountain bike with studded tires on the snowmobile trails, but never a skate blade...

The pic of the bike in Copenhagen (København) is part a nationwide scheme in Denmark where you can "rent" a bike in almost all of the bigger cities, by inserting Dkr20 (about $2) into it. This releases a mechanism so that the bike can be ridden.
When you return the bike you get your money back. This is aimed at people who did not cycle into the city, but who would like to get around by bike once they are there, instead of taking a taxi. Smart hey?!!!
NO. they actually dont get stolen by folk...!!

I live in the capital of Finland, Helsinki. We have the same kind of system as in Copenhagen, even the bikes look the same. I haven't ridden one but I'd imagine they're not really comfortable and heavy. Some of them are broken and make wierd noises :P

In all honesty, the bikes suck, but it keeps cars of the road.

Here is one of my favourites. It is a bike made in Christania, a free hippy society within Copenhagen, where the sell of soft drugs (hash etc) is tolerated.
