Very sad news.

Riding a bike in this city should not be a life-ending occurrence.

someone posted on a blog to assume that especially trucks and buses have no clue
people ride bikes. i think that this is a very good rule of thumb,
also they are probably really stressed and not paying attention anyways.
i got hit by a van in a similar thing to this cat a few weeks back but
it wasnt serious.
i feel bad for this brother, sorry to hear this.

bottom line- the city needs to do more to ensure the safety of city cyclists.

My cousin was telling me about getting bumped and almost run into a parked car by a dollar van on Flatbush Ave. Now he's wary of riding to Prospect Park. And this is a guy that got hit by a jeepney in Manila while riding to work and still made it to work on time. I gave him some ideas on different routes, but basically, the message is, be careful, measure the risks on your route carefully and ride appropriately.

Terrible news.
I was pushed out of my bike lane and eventually pushed over by a driver who didn't see me while they were merging in to traffic. Luckily the light behind me was red so no cars were coming. I was really lucky and the fall was minor. I gave her a piece of my mind and squeezed $450 out of her though. I wish these other folks could have been as lucky.

"A hit-and-run thug drag-racing in a stolen car killed a man riding a bicycle in Brooklyn yesterday, then brazenly hopped into a car driven by his speedster buddy and fled, police said."

I wonder if the police really said "hit-and-run thug" and "speedster buddy"

be careful out there. it isn't getting any better.

...And neither is the writing in the Post, apparently.

it was on all the new channels last night. The car was completely smashed from hitting the guy, it looked like it hit a deer, that was how fast they were going. the guy's bike was mangled and one of the witnesses said one of the victim's foot was pretty much hanging by a piece of muscle... it was horrible and I hope they get that f**ker that did this and his buddies.

not like he reads it, but...

www.nyc.gov/html/mail/html/mayor.html

Dear Mayor Bloomberg,
Riding a bike in this city is turning into a deathwish, Mr Mayor. In the past 24 hours two men have been killed by hit-and-run drivers, and two children were killed last week as well by reckless drivers. I am shocked at the level of disregard your admistration has shown towards this issue, and demand that you take substantial action to make our streets safer for the majority of New Yorkers who don't drive cars. Transportation Alternitives and Times Up! both have excellant ideas on how to do this.
best,
Steve T.
