Advocacy & Safety - Bicycle Riding Candidate for Governor

I was reading the Economist when my eyes were drawn to a photo of a man standing astride an Xtracycle. Rod Byran, an independent candidate for governor in Arkansas, is getting international press with his outsider campaign. Mr. Bryan believes that making it easier for people to ride bicycles would improve the quality of life, make everyone healthier, and lessen Arkansas's obesity rate.

I wish he could run for michigan

We had a politician do this a few years ago, while running for Governor. He was former state senator Thomas Birmingham.

Birmingham had been a heavy smoker all of his adult life. He was told by his doctor that he really should quit, and try to lose some weight. He quit cold turkey, and took up cycling from his home in Chelsea, to the State house. This was only a few miles, but as time went on, it got easier.

He decided to bike around certain areas of the state, because the bike made it easy to meet and talk with people. He promised that if elected, he would make cyclists' rights, and construction of the proposed Mass Central Rail Trail, a priority.

Alas, he did not get the democratic party nomination, and thus, did not become Governor. Dang! (The Dems chose Shannon O'Brien as their nominee. No further comment required. But, "The best bad guys always return".)

I also wish we had more politicians like these people. We do have a few, in local and national offices, but not enough.

I think the more bicycle-riding politicians we have in office, the more we'll see them fight for cyclists' issues. It really takes a cyclist to see things from our perspective.

Maybe that's because people don't give their unwavering support for someone based on one issue only.

Riding a bike "usually" gives an "I care" impression? Really?

Like folks who jog, run, play tennis, raquetball, softball or use a treadmill, I ride a bike because that is an activity I choose for exercise. I ride my bike because it's fun and contributes to my well-being. I apologize to people who think I am riding to send any particular message or impression. :o
