Commuting - another handlebar question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

anyone know if this can be done? I have trek su100 -- i have installed treking handlebars and clipless pedals but now I think I would like to go to drop bars... can I do this with this bike, I am guessing I would need new shifters too... what kind? Is this very difficult to change shifters... and is it worth it or should I just go to a 'true' road bike??? forgive my ignorance on the technical stuff -- I love to ride and I don't mind getting dirty (or greasy) hands I just don't know if my idea is feasible with this bike.
thanks

What do you dislike about the trekking bars? I am looking closely at buying trekking bar for my Trek 7500 to get the extra hand positions plus some extra room for stuff I want on my bar. I know some people don't like the looks of a trekking bar but from a functional view, they look good to me.

I do like the treking bars alot, however the hand position on drops just feels better esp after the 8th or 9th mile. The look of the treking bars I don't mind -- kind of a geeky look I guess but sure easy to pick out my bike in a crowded LBS :) I may try turning the bars around with the ends away from (currently closer to me) and see how that feels.

Yes you can however it will be fairly expensive.
In addition to the drop bar you will probably need a new stem, new brake levers and bar end shifters or integrated road brifters.
Brifters start about $100 but bar end shifters plus brake levers will be nearly the same.
It not hard to install shifters and brake levers and doesn't require any special tools so you can probably do it yourself. However it maybe to the point where you want to look for a good used road or touring bike.

Yea. Unfortunately, this comes under "Damn! I should have bought a road or cyclocross bike!". How 'bout trading the bike in on what you really need. Or better yet, you'll get more if you sell it on Craig's List and go shopping with the cash.
