I feel guilty for enjoying this thread. Especially after gorging on four hours of original Trek Uncut this morning after my ride.
Then again, guilt is a human emotion. So illogical...
And suddenly, the size of my photobucket has just swelled....

That is true. Has anyone seen the abomination that is Star Trek 2.0? It's like, the Original Series with a bunch of scrolling internet chat and dumb stats for each episode. It's extremely stupid. I liked The Next Generation, and DS9 was OK, but I grew up on the original Star trek, Monty Python and The Muppet Show, sort of a perfect nerd trifecta.

My nerd trifecta would be Dr. Who, Monty Python and Red Dwarf.

haha ironically I don't like monty python. Red Dwarf was/is good for its look and feel but really didn't interest me as a story.

No way.....I think they are doing a FANTASTIC job with the new ones.
And saying "the original" is kind of misleading as they had 8 doctors between 1963 and 1993.

I've heard really good things about the new one, I need to rent those... Anyway, I like most incarnations of Dr. Who, although Star Trek pwns them in the special effects department. Best thing in the last decade was Farscape, in my opinion, which the new Dr. Who seems to be emulating, to some extent.

By original I am talking about the first 4 or 5 (I am not EXACTLY sure) but I didn't like the new ones. They didn't appeal to me.

I love my sci fi but find more of it to weak today (not to derail the thread) I love both the morbitiy and explorative nature of old sci fi. Stuff today seems to fluffy. Or maybe I am just more bitter than I used to be hahaha

I like the older sci-fi better too, but I'd say the opposite. The new stuff focuses too much on being "techy" and not on cool stories. I don't care what genre a show/book is....the story is what makes it good.
As I said, I loved Doctor Who....I'm a HUGE fan. One of the best attributes of the show, IMO is that they don't spend a lot of money on special effects and don't try to make it super high-tech (explaining the scientific principal behind everything like Star Trek did).

Well, I somewhat agree with you.
At some point they did get a bit weaker, but #7 (Sylverster McCoy) was quite brilliant I thought.

Check it out: I just started watching reruns of The Next Generation for the first time , since it was on the air. What dumbfounded me was how they were such complete...uh...vaginas about everything. I watched the first one where they encountered the Borg-They're face-to-face with an enemy ship, they'd already sustained casualties and had a portion of their ship cut off, so what do they do? Have two seperate conferences, with their empathic counselor and Whoopi ****ing Goldberg! :crash:
Kirk would've stayed on the bridge, blown them to bits and have slept with someone, by then.

I never saw any of the original Dr. Who's, but I saw a few episodes of the new version on the Scifi channel a couple weeks ago and thought it was pretty good. Some of these posters for that show would be pretty good.

To continue off-topic:
I agree. The genre has largely gone stale. I think part of it is to blame on the explosion that happened in the 60's. Now every time someone tries to go for new ideas, somebody goes "Oh come, that was season 2, episode 11 where Kirk was wrestling with slimy dude who could turn invisible." So instead they fill it with fluffy storylines to try to bring in the more mainstream audiences.

Just get them off torrents like I do.
They play every Saturday night over there, so Sunday morning crank up µTorrent and grab the .torrent file from www.isohunt.com and you're good to go. I've been watching them the next day after they came out since the show started back up in 2005.

It's a great setup. And the last episode (last Saturday), "blink" was perhaps the best episode of all seasons since the new doctor who started up again. :) Just sayin....

I cut my teeth on the science fiction shows of the 60's: Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Star Trek, Time Tunnel, the Land of Giants, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost in Space, etc. Classics, all, as I remember them from 40 years ago.
Having said that, I am really liking the new Battlestar Galactica these days.
Troi always had the unfailing ability to state the obvious. :)
Alien: "Surrender or I'll destroy your ship!"
Troi: "I sense hostility."
And I'm totally printing that "Alcohol" poster from the web site. That's probably my favorite Star Trek scene ever.

I don't think he said that (unless I missed something) but I don't like dr who. I liked it when I was a kid, but I just can't get into it today. I can go back an re-watch everything over and over again, but the dr who plot lines just seemed to basic (or something, I could never put my finger on it...)

I have actually never watched Dr. Who. I don't think it was broadcast much, if at all, in the Seattle area. I think our local PBS channel, Channel Nine, may have shown it for a bit. I cannot recall seeing it on our local Comcast lineup for the last several years. Do you think I should try to find some DVDs and watch it?

I would probably find some torrents to test the waters first. If you like it buy it. I would look for some classics and a couple of the newer. SHould be easy enough to find.

No, but I said that because he listed all those old classics, but did not mention Doctor Who. I know what you may not like about doctor who....and its probably the reason I do like it over most modern sci-fi like Star Trek. Yes, its basic, not necessarily the plots (though sometimes), but the "science". It's not a modern style sci-fi where half the show is spewing techno-speak, like Star Trek has always done. I'm not saying I don't like that at times, but its more focused on the story than "technology" behind what's happening.
Star Trek would spend about 25 minutes of every 60 minute show talking about Barium isotopes, quantum compression fields, heavy mass photon particles and reverse-spin quark entities rather than just spend that time developing the story more.

I live in your area now....so that will likely be my boat too. I get them off bit torrents like I mentioned earlier. I'm sure you can get plenty of old ones too. PM me if you are really interested and would like some pointers to good episodes or anything.

I like it in books, because books are meant to contain the detail. But tv/movies are different to me...you have a limited amount of time, so spend it developing the story. Nothing annoys me more than a show with tons of technical details, but a horribly weak story because they had to cut so much of the story development.
