Six years ago this August 18, I had bypass surgery. Since that time , I have tried to get the old bod in better shape - cardio and other wise. I work out at the gym 3 times a week and took up bike riding which I have grown to love. The first year of riding, I thought I was really doing great when I rode 600 miles for that calander year. With my 60th birthday on August 10, 2004, I decided to attempt my first century - which I completed. Last year, I did it again. And today (my 62nd birthday) I rode my third.
I left at 4:30 AM and finished at 1:08 PM. It was HOT, 106 degrees when finishing and a 12-15MPH wind. The heat really took it out of me - had to take my birthday nap and then go get my birthday massage....
My avg. was 15.5 MPH. I had to take about 10 rest stops because of the heat and the last 20 miles were as hard and slow as any I've ridden.
I'm proud to have made it another year - I tell my friends and family that I will do it every year until I can't - they all think I'm crazy - maybe I am........
