...to bike in the city. not to have a menage a trois, for anyone looking for Penthouse letters to the editor.

we've been living in Toronto for 10 years, almost all of them "shacked up" together. i never thought i'd want to bike in the city, until i tried it my second year and loved it way more than biking in the country. she's always been very afraid, especially paranoid for my safety when i worked summers in college as a courier.

but on a recent trip by to my folks' place out in farm country, she wanted to take a spin out on the county roads. got a few miles in that weekend, and i told her if she was willing to risk it on roads that had rednecks in pickups whizzing by at 120km/h, she'd be fine in the city!

so i got me a custom singlespeed roadie my bro had slapped together for me, she inheritted my old beater mountain bike. our first ride to Riverdale Farm just to get her feet wet she ends up wanting to go up the DVP trail a few miles. now we've been to the Island a few times, the Beaches once (that wore her out!) tough nuts that my SS got SWIPED, but getting a new one soon.

i feel sorry for her having to drag around my tank of a cheapass MTB, would like to get her into something lighter so she can at least keep up abit better - but hey, we're having fun!

just some encouraging words to anyone else whos significant other is hesitant to join them on the road!

peace,
joe

Cool story. (too bad ur bike got jacked though)
my girlfriend was always fairly afraid of biking anywhere except the bikepath and when I met her she hadn't ridden a bike for almost 4 years. I slapped together some parts and a beater road frame to get her going and it turned out great. Turns out she never had anything but a cruiser so riding a speedy bike certainly improved her confidence.

After some time she ended up converting it from a 21-speed to a 7-speed and then to a singlespeed(53-18 nonetheless!). She started riding to school and became so intrigued with bikes we bought another frame for her and she learned how to built it up from scratch. Now just a week ago she borrowed my track wheel and won't give it back!! Crazy.
