My spot is right on the corner of 7th and 23rd St. right next to that Papaya place. Its an asian Mexican take out place. Looks like the cooks havnt showered in 3 weeks but damn those burritos are freakin MASSIVE! and less then 4 bucks! yumm!

good suggestions so far.
that place on 7th and 23rd is your standard chexican fare. not bad, as it goes. all of those 'tortilla' places are exactly the same!
dumpling house on eldridge - excellent suggestion. i avoid the greasy dumplings there, but go for the $2 boild veggie dumplings. douse them in hot sauce and top it off with a sesame pancake for 50 cents. excellent.
punjabi is also a great suggestion. $2 for a small rice with mystery veggies #1-5 (i just pick two at random, never sure what's what. they're all good). i recommend adding a fried samosa covered in tamarind sauce for another 75 cents.
punjabi usually gives me those "uh oh" gastro rumblings an hour or two later.

and if im really thirsty, i go to subways on 18 btwn broadway and 5th for a 6 inch, but free unlimited drinks, so long as its after 5. Nothing like a 3 dollar sub, and 10 bucks worth of beverages thrown in for free.

Seconds to that. Dumpling House does, in fact, rock. I think some gals made a DVD about how much it rocks.
PUNJABI! lahore is sweet too, one whatever street that is between broadway and lafayette, a couple feet south of houston

I second dumpling house on eldridge and also punjabi's.
Also there's a hispanic place on lafayette just north of spring, not as cheap as others but you get great stew or whole chicken for something like 6 bucks.

Is that the place that looks like a weird shack from the outside? I think the building is yellow? That place is good.
brunop's suggestion of Uptown Juice Bar is also friggin' amazing, but I'd imagine that since the Church St location shut down that it's pretty far out of the way for most folks.
I do not live in NYC. I do, however, like to eat.

yeah, it's kinda run down on the outside and inside... tiny little spot but amazing food.
also the chinese place on centre, just north of canal. for 4 bucks you get rice, choice of 4 sides and a soup, very authentic taiwanese takeout food. One of my favorite places for lunch in the city.
All this cheap lunch mention, and no banh mi? Vietnamese sandwiches (usually ground pork, ham, vegetables, mayo, hot peppers on a toasted baguette) for like $3. I like the joint on Lafayette at the corner of Walker (block south of Houston) and the place on Broome between Elizabeth and Mott. Nicky's on 2nd and B is also good, but they're $4.50 instead of $3 -- bigger sandwich though.

Is that diner in Quicksilver a real place and still around?

Have you gone to the market on Elizabeth between mott and whatever is south of mott? The market actually runs through the whole block from Elizabeth to Mott so you can enter on either side. Anyway, you can get basically the same deal for $3, but only 3 dishes. It's still more than a normal person can eat without getting sick though.

punjabi just raised it's prices to a wallet busting $2.50 for 2 veggies and rice...
for bahn mi my personal favorite is the one on Mott south of Grand in the back of the Jewelry store, but yeah any of the other ones mentioned will do the trick.

OH YES! This place is great. There are 2 buffet areas, serving different food sometimes. really good asian food! all for 3 bucks! Can't beat it. And if you go acroos the street on Elizabeth there is a corner asian market that sells bottles of Poland Spring water for 40 cents! same ones that cost me $1.50 midtown. I always stock up there for the day.
This turned out to be a pretty good thread. I'll have to check out some of these spots when i'm on the next break.
40st and Madison Mc D's. $2.14 McChicken & Double Cheeseburger.
Any vending machine that carries snickers.
Boiled and fried dumplings... puke... but, sesame pancake, yum yum give me some.

The "Dosa Man" cart guy -- amazing authentic south Indian food. Dosas go for $4 or $5, samosas and veggie drumsticks for $1 a pop. His cart can be found on the south side of Washington Square Park every weekday around lunch time. All vegan.

that market is amazing...i used to get those sticky-rice/unknown-meat/peanut things wrapped in a banana leaf all the time: $2 and soda is .50 cents. basically (if you're not picky) chinatown is the cheapest food in manhattan.
the other cheap/fast/boring food you can get everywhere is a bagel and cream cheese.
