Foo - If I shave my head, will it grow back faster???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So ah... I remember from high-school that they said if you shave your moustache, it'll grow back faster? Some girls seem to be saying that about their legs as well, thus the waxing and yanking.
So... if I shave my head bald, will it grow back faster?
Your hair or your head?

I wish my screen name was something cool, like "Lord Font Leroy" or "The Professor" or maybe "Der Wille Zur Macht" or perhaps "All your base are belong to us."

They say that you know whether you're going to go bald or not based on men on your mother's side of the family. None of them lived long enough to go bald, so I guess my future is up in the air.
As far as hair loss is concerned. Every other aspect of my future has been . . . . foretold.

You'd rather not get in to that debate, I think.

Nothing grows back faster if you cut it off....if that was the case, guys the world around would be cutting their wangs off repeatedly until it becomes roughly the size of a 747....then cry because they can't do anything with it.

I started going bald in my early 20's. One of the side effects of too much testosterone; it kills off the hair follicles. About a year ago, I started shaving my whole head every morning. Shaving does not make the hair grow faster or fuller.

I'm 20 and getting a swift kick in the ass from male pattern baldness already. I thought I had it beat with diet and exersize because I think thyroid problems are to blame, but the stress of working 60 hour weeks got it falling out again. Its not too bad yet, but its getting more and more noticeable. Theres a place near me that does a full transplant for a couple grand. I might just go for it next summer. Until then, I'll take the shave it short route too.
You need the Quintippio.

It's reasons like that why I went to a straight razor....only one blade, and it still shaves closer than a Mach3, or whatever other craptacular idea they come up with.

There is a dirty little secret about hair transplants that the plastic surgeons may tend to gloss over. Depending on the cause of your male pattern baldness, the transplanted follicles may have a relatively short life span before they, too, die off. This is particularly the case for the androgen-caused cases of baldness. Orchiectomy (surgical removal of the testicles) is definitive treatment, but is considered overkill by most patients. Topical minoxidil and oral finesteride reduce the impact of male hormones on the follicles and can slow the rate of hair loss.
It is entirely possible for someone to pay $ 10,000 or so USD for a full hair transplant and have it die off within five years or so. This means that you have to have another hair transplant. In many cases now, after a hair transplant, the patient is also put on oral finesteride for life in an attempt to prolong the life of the transplant, but this drug also has some side effects.
I started going bald from the forehead up in my early 20's and now shave my head daily twenty years later. I think it looks better than just having a fringe around the sides. Knowing what I do, there is no way I would go for the transplant route.

If I go bald, oh well. Might as well embrace your permanent physical traits, instead of trying to cover it up. All that will do is costs lots of money, and probably not even work all that well.

What you are thinking of is when you shave, or cut your hair, hair shaft becomes blunt. So when it grows back, it is fuller looking for a short while. Then the end of the hair sort of "rounds off" and that appearance is lost. Cutting hair does nothing to the follicles that produce the hair.
