Participants eat blueberry (if available) pie (or seasonal pie) in a cafe' (or the closest thing they can find to a cafe') on the 3rd Saturday in September in the middle of a bicycle ride of at least 15 miles.
Afterwards, we will document your experiences with photographs of wonderful cafe's, delicious pies and stories.

I'll sign up, However blueberries will be out of season. I'll have to freeze some....
Uh, I have my second hardest ride of the year the next day. Any chance I can qualify by delaying my participation until Sept 17? I think I can meet the mileage requirements as the ride finishes at the top of Grandfather Mountain after 102 miles. I'm sure I will have an appetite for blueberry pie afterwards.......and cherry, pecan, chocolate.........

If it's only the 2nd hardest ride of the year, then what's the problem? Use Ride for PIE as a warm-down prep treat or be remembered forever as the BF50+'er that used riding his bike as an excuse...:D (just kidding)

It's a Saturday I have off, and already looking forward to it. My wife will join me, she's over 50, but not a member of this forum (yet)

Dnvr, I can't commit just yet. Thought things were getting better after surgery but an X-ray on Friday confirmed a stray pain. One of the anchor screws for the ratator cuff repair came out of the bone and is pointing straight out of the shoulder. The X-ray looks like something out of a Disney cartoon. I'll let you know.

Since I like to ride at dawn, can I have blueberry pancakes instead of pie? Also, a whole lot less lard!

I'm in. Got vacation that week. I wonder if there's any other members in the South Bay Area that know of a place we could ride to and meet up for some pie.

Just signed up. Cool idea. Will bake my own for post ride piggery-- eat your hearts out-- Irma has met her match.
***I won't even consider rivaling Irma for her Deep Fried Cheese Curd.
Sign me up! Also sign Skipper up. He cannot do it for himself as his computer still refuses to recognize the existence of the bike forums.

How strict are the rules? I don't really want to carry a lock with me, so I'd prefer to have my pie (and eat it too!) at home after the ride. :)

I'm in for the blueberry challenge. My kid Robb loves blueberry pie so I'll try to drag him along...but not sure if it'll be available so late. Next year can we try for an August date? I'll have to scout out a cafe ahead of time but it will be an urban ride inside Toronto.
"Bluet" is French (or at least the Quebec term) for blueberry and also the slang term for French Canadians from the Saguenay region of Quebec, so I propose we all consider ourselves "bluets" for a day.

I was going to bake mine and take it with me also. There is good coffee at a little store about 20 miles from here that would go well with a slice of pie
About the only blueberry pie to be found around here in September is going to be Hostess (yuk)
From Diet Detective:
Homemade blueberry pie 360 calories 17 grams fat
Hostess blueberry pie snack cake 480 Calories 21 grams of fat

There is ONE RULE:
1) must be a pie made from some sort of fruit
OR
1) must be blueberry something (pie, pancakes, ice cream, jam)
AND
1) you must send a picture...

+ 1 rule: ride must be the equivalent of 15 miles to earn PIE
THEREFORE:
jppe can earn his pie AFTER his 2nd hardest ride of the year
Monobarracho can earn his pie from the trainer riding = 15 miles
DeeGee can earn his pie without having to carry his bike lock & slow him down in the 15 miles
cruzMOK can earn his pie while imagining himself riding 15 miles & pressing on the painful spot in the back of his leg
Will Dehne has a 200-mile radius in which to earn his pie
Webb Diego can earn his pie by protecting the rest of us from the mean streets
Dnvr can earn his pie by riding 15 miles & singing all 4 parts of hymns in SPEBQ-style
PastorBob can earn his pie by preaching the sermon of his life based around the moral lessons associated with earning the right to eat blueberry pie
Need I go on? :D

Yes. What about you? Can you earn your pie by landscaping 15 miles of Texas, for instance?

Okay, smart guy, the Tx DOT spends $1,000,000 a mile to landscape freeways in this state. Why so much, you ask? Heck if I know!
BUT I won't BE in Texas for the 1st Annual BF50+ Ride for Pie day: so I have 2 options:
1) I can just write a check & send to TxDOT to landscape my 15 miles of Texas & get to eat pie in Germany. BTW, in this state, you get to pay for highway amenities instead of just getting your name on some little sign that says you 'adopted' that stretch of road (i.e. to pick up the trash). I haven't chosen my section of highway yet but maybe I'll choose a part of I-10 that heads towards San Diego...somewhere out towards Balmorea or Guadalupe Mts. NP. Some nice safe town where no one ever locks their doors or their bikes...
[NOTE:Thank goodness oil prices have been going up recently so the income from the family farm's oil leases will cover most of the 15 miles of landscape this month then I can pay it off whatever's left in September...]
OR
2) I'll just ride around in rainy drizzly chilly Bonn until I've clocked 15 miles, find a decent bakery, LOCK my bike at a convenient bike stand & go have PIE and coffee. Here's hoping some of my students will join me but somehow we'll get 'er done. We're Texas Aggies, after all.
Viva la Pie! Gig 'em, Pie!

I'll have to revise my ride for pie plans. Seems I discovered the the Shoo Fly Classic bike tour is running that day. http://www.berksbicycle.com/shoofly.htm
So I will be riding for pie, but the pie with be Shoo-Fly pie. And I do hope to get a few laps in the velodrome. And more pie.

What the heck? Sign me up. I imagine Mae Bob's Diner in Irwinton would have a blueberry pie if anyone around here would. If not, I know they'll have something worth riding about 25 miles each way to eat. Frankly, I'd much rather have fresh blueberries with vanilla ice cream than that syrupy mess in pie filling, but whatever.

Blueberry grits?
That's nasty!
But it reminds me of a funny story. My wife and I were eating breakfast at Clary's on Abercorn in Savannah a few years ago. At the next table was a family from somewhere up north, Pennsylvania I think. One woman at the table had an especially annoying loud, nasal, whiney voice and she talked non-stop the whole time we were there. I've learned to filter such noise out for the most part, but then she said something I'll never forget for all my days. She asked the waitress if she could have some Equal (fake sugar) for her grits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We asked for our bill and promptly left.

I'll be on the second day of the Mickelson Trail Trek along a 100+ mile rails to trails line through beautiful Black Hills in South Dakota! Where would be a better place to eat pie? Hopefully blueberries will be in season.

If nobody objects, I'm baking my own. Most of the restaurants out where I ride have names like The Golden Dragon or maybe Hortensio's Taco Truck...no pie on the menu. A few chain outfits like Marie Calendar's offer pie facsimiles but they don't resemble real cafe pies in any way--especially Irma's. I've already got the blueberries frozen. Me and a few riding friends will eat it at our post Saturday morning ride lunch.

For anyone within riding distance of York, Pa., the pie destination of choice has to be Brown's Market, for deep-dish apple pie. I ride up from Baltimore a couple of times a year to bring back a pie; just under 100 miles round trip, and well worth it. They bake a good blueberry pie too, I'd guess, but no blueberry pie could be as good as their apple pie. (To anyone who might doubt that statement - you have my sympathy.)

Seafoam at the finish with a smile, a pie, and quart of Endurox to wash it down with! You gotta promise to have a pie for her when she gets back on the bike. Yours can be store bought.

It looks like my "Ride for Pie" may become a club ride. I am co-activities chair for the club and my counterpart and I have decided to make it so. We will all meet at a local cafe (which offers a discount to bike club members) for lunch, after riding in from two or three directions. Then, after lunch, ride to the backery (about 5 miles away) for PIE! MMMM boy.

Does this count?
Sept 2 at the Midwest Tandem Rally, after bicycling of course, we took a group of 10 (all over 50) to a dinky little restaurant in a dinky little Iowa town for dinner and home made pie. Since we had called ahead they baked a couple of extra pies which they held back for us. They had apple, banana cream, rasberry and peanut butter. Alas, no blueberry. I had peanut butter. The crust was extra flakey. It was great!
Sounds like a lot of fun! Both the riding AND the pie eating!
I'll be halfway through the Mickelson Trail Trek in the Black Hills of SD, so will be keeping a couple of eyes peeled for a pie place!

You're joking, right? Surely you can ride enough that day to more than negate the tiny bit of damage a small slice of pie will do.
