Advocacy & Safety - I need a wall to protect me from cars!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

In that photo\, is that guy on the wrong side of the street?
I'm assumingt thats a 2 lane road.

Yes, the guy in the picture is going the wrong way - he's probably going to turn left into Doheeney State Park. People often cross over before the intersection and go a short distance on the wrong side.

The wall will not be where the picture shows, but behind the photographer, where the road goes from 2 lanes to 4 lanes (without getting much wider). There is no bike lane there and the edge of the road is crumbly. Now that I think about it, that 1.5 miles is the worst section of my 18 mile (each way) commute.

What's so fascinating about a guy going the wrong way? There are plenty of threads about that!

This thread is about a wall they are building to protect cyclists (and joggers) from being hit by cars!

Doesn't anyone find that interesting?

When I read it, first thing that popped in to my head is who is going to clean it? I can just imagine it slowly getting filled with debries, and other junk untill it becomes unridable and now cyclists will be back on a road but now without a shoulder to ride on.
Is there a budget to maintain it? Because after the wall goes up, I don't think it will be maintained as part of highway maintance.

If the path gets dirty well there are several parallel roads up on the bluff and much of the hzard zone is matched by the access road on the west side of the tracks. I biked and drove commercially thru the area for years. If the new protected bike path gets dirty ride thru there at night and throw the trash over on the motorists side. I carry rubber gloves so I can heave road kill into traffic lanes.

Good question about maintenance. Since the lane will be 10 feet wide, the weekly street sweeper will probably be able to fit through. If not, this is a pretty busy area so I think there will be enough joggers and cyclists to keep the debris from accumulating.

...there are several parallel roads up on the bluff...

Yeah, I had to make that steep climb up Palisades on my commute for 2 years when PCH was closed due to the land slide. Faced with a choice between a little debris or that climb, I'll take the debris!

WOrried about how bicycling is portrayed in the media.
Don't mind the wall, unless it forces bikes to ride there.
They do this on 80 between west sac and davis, but thats an interstate, so there's a good reason for it.

Why worry about how bicycling is portrayed in the media? Do you think it could possibly be worse? Besides, most people who do not ride probably think the guy is going the right way!

Complain if you want, but I doubt if any media types check with BikeForums before they print something about cycling. Let's enjoy our sport/hobby/passion without worrying so much about perceptions. Besides not having anything to do with this thread, it is also something we can do nothing about - we have absolutely no control over how media writers choose to portray us.

Whether it forces me to ride there or not, I am likely to ride there anyway because it is kind of scary riding that stretch now with cars passing close by at 50-60 mph. I have been commuting on that stretch for about 4 years, and I usually hammer to get through it as quickly as possible.
