ok so we now know that the admin can look at our passwords but not after they have to do alot of unencrypting and use with different softwares and that jazz and its just not worth the time for a little laugh.

but now if they did just have a button right next the the red reply one that said look at this persons password. what do you guys thing would be some funny of embarassing ones :P

As a mod, no I cannot. I don't believe admins can either. If that is comforting or not, there it is :).

Technically the admin might be able to see the password provided they have access at the OS or network level and can sniff the interface since passwords are submitted in cleartext. I also suppose they can run a cracker on the encrypted password stored in the database. A third method would be to attach a debugger to the running program and print the contents of the memory location where the password is stored either temporarily or permanently. But generally speaking, with most applications and operating systems, the passwords are encrypted and stored as such so it's typically not a trivial manner to see what others have chosen as a password.

But to put what I said another way: there's no easy method to view someone's password directly. Certainly I don't believe the software provides a built-in one.

But we don't. And in the end only joe has access to the raw db. Just as a matter of confidentiality I would never do it. Comes with the territory (since I am in fact a real admin outside of bf too)

Sorry. I should have added that part. In general, in the world of computer and network administration, there are very few mitigating circumstances where sniffing or cracking passwords is ethically warranted. Also, most admins have better things to do with their time. ;)

We have also created cyborg replicas of each member. We will eventually replace each member with their cyborg. Once the swap is complete you will all be free to cycle all day long while your cyborg takes over all your mundane life tasks. We figure it's a win - win situation.

It depends on the board software. On another forum where I am a Senior Moderator, we used FuseTalk. I could look at a member's details and view their password. We've since switched to vBulletin, which does not allow me to view passwords, just as the Mods here have said.

Back when we used FuseTalk, we had a Senior Mod who abused his powers to access his ex-gf's PMs, as well as her new bf's PMs. When the abuse was discovered, he was stripped of his authority.
