How often do you measure your chain for "chain stretch"? This task usually goes undone and you end up ruining your drivetrain.

The pins and rollers on the chain get worn out eventually. You need to replace your chain every once in a while. You can usually go 3 chains per cassette and the 2 cassettes per set of chainrings, so every 6 chains you will probably need a new drivetrain. (this is just an approximation)

If your chain is already skipping, most likely you have waited too long because the cassette is probably wallered out too much to be useful. Go to your LBS and have them measure the chain. Replace it if needed. If the cassette is worn out, the new chain will not seat properly and you will skip teeth under power. If that happens, replace the cassette. You should be good to go after that, but if there is the slight chance that you have gone soooooo long that you have worn out the chainrings as well, the symptom will be the same and you will need to replace those too.

Next time, clean and lube your chain before every ride. Check your chain once or twice a month. Keep on top of this stuff and it won't cost you so much $$$ in the end.

Good luck

is it possible, cud just be a stiff chain link also...?

hard to tell exactly what the problem is fm the description... I hv bought too dodgy chains recently, feels like the chain get's stuck and then releases - almost like it is dropping to a smaller ring..but it's not.

that sounds like worn out rings but I may be wrong. look between the teeth. if they look like fish hooks instead of "C"s then replace them

Your chain is skipping. Rising up off the rear cogs and jumping forward. Cause include using the small front chain ring with the smallest back one, worn cogs, and stretched chain. If you are using a small front ring, you can exert a lot of tension on the chain, and if you use a small rear cog, there aren't enough teeth to share the load, especially if they're worn. Also the "cross chaining" may increase the chance of this happening since the chain gets pulled sideways off the rear cog.

You may be able to avoid the problem by not using small/small combos.

your freehub may be skipping as well.

if it was me, i would take the whole drivechain appart, inspect it, clean it then fit it again. by inspecting it all you should find the problem.

Ok thanks i got the bike last october and really didnt ride it much except on the roads until this august. since i have one free service on the bike from when i bought it im going to ask them when i take it in , and until then i am just going to look it over good and make sure my sprockets are good. so if they look like fish hooks they are bad but if they are straight they are good? thanks
