Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling - Google Video Man Rides 50 Miles Most of It on Wrong Side of Road

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was watching this video and I couldn't stop thinking about the fact that the guy was riding down the wrong side of the road. I just kept thinking how bizzare that this guy wold ride so far all the while riding down the left side of the road.

In school back in Europe they always told us to walk and ride a bike on the left side of the street because then you can see cars coming your way as opposed to them sneaking up behind you when you are about to go around that huge pothole. It just makes more sense to me.

This should be moved to Advocacy and Safety. It's not a long distance forum issue.

Good for him I guess. Everyone should push themselves, but wow, that guy has a lot of opinions.

I like the fact that he apparently considers "structural damage" to the bike less severe than a flat tire. Everyone should learn to change a tube.

I find it very difficult not to make snobby comments after watching this video, so I'll just shut up now.

It just makes more sense to me.

Please explain to me how you would make a right (or left for that matter) turn from the left lane with traffic coming towards you. The only way this would be possible, in my opinion, is to act as a vehicle (albeit a confused one) half the time and as a pedestrian the other half...all while dodging cars who have no idea what your planned route is.

No thank you. I'll stick to the sneaky cars on the right side and my trusty take-a-look mirror anyday.

Additionally, I'd rather be hit from behind by a car moving at 30 mph than head-on by a car moving 30 mph.

Hit from behind: 30mph (car's speed) - 20mph (my speed) = 10mph net speed of impact
Hit head-on: 30mph (car's speed) + 20mph (my speed) = 50mph net speed of impact

Neither collision is good, but why make it worse with something in your control (your direction of travel). Not to mention that it's illegal in most places.

Sorry, I'm done ranting. Carry on.

I couldn't get beyond two minutes. Does he do anything else besides whine and ***** while bobbing the camera around?
