Alcohol installed grips almost killed me 6 hours later in the alleycats and inspired this thread. Have tried water and it's been even worse. Takes too long to evaporate if you actually intend riding the bike in the near future.
This stuff evaporates instantly, removes all grease and creates some kind of underpressure thus really sucking the grips onto the bar. Try it or some similar product next time and you'll love me.
p.s. bel-ray people, you can start flooding my address with free samples now thanks.
We use air in the shop, as it gets it on instantly and you never have to worry about the grip slipping..

hairspray works well,
as does mounting adhesive..
they will never come off unless you want them to.
a) For real, who can use air in their apartment?
b) Why do you have hairspray? You metro.
c) Brute force is just wrong. Like prison sex wrong.
Sam why would you choose 24 hours over 5 mins?
This thread was supposed to be locked and made a sticky.

Assuming that fg/ss riders are all renters? I know lots of people that have a modest air compressor in their households, mang. Air compressors are the bomb for so many odd jobs.

I am sitting here thinking, Oury's + Brake & Contact Cleaner = Bush and scratching my head wondering why the OP would say it is the end all and then tell us it is bush. I missed that "mission accomplished" sign at first. Just thought I would share how slow I am on Mondays.
I am surprised alcohol took so long to evaporate.

well, according to the OPs picture logic, using his method to put on grips claims to work prematurely and will still not have dried out properly several years down the road after several broken teeth from the grips sliding off all of a sudden. Soon the grips will be splintered apart into new, smaller grips ready to be annexed by neighbouring grips.
You can use a can of keyboard duster instead of an air compressor as well... We are all probably more likely to have that than whatever chemical it is you use. Also if you're going to go out and buy a can of something it may as well be multipurpose (ie. able to clean your keyboard as well).

Are you saying you guys voted a ******** gas dealer to run your country? Now why would you do that?
Actually if this stuff wasn't so extremely multipurpose, I wouldn't probably had posted this at all. It kills the bugs and I even put it on my serial.
I wasn't s-kidding about those free samples, Bel-Ray. I'm running out of this sh1te so ship it.

Well the fact that this stuff can be used as an effective poison pretty much completely closes the door on me using it. Thanks anyways though.

so...uh....i want white oury's to match my white vetta seat.
where did you get them because i can only find them on UK sites that won't ship to the states...sigh.
How, exactly, does one use compressed air to mount grips? Especially air in a can? I like the sound of it (cheeeep and not messy) but I can't visualize the process.

oh! a quick on-topic addition:
i believe that bel ray stuff is the same as the generic "brake and parts cleaner" spray you can snag from any auto parts store like pep boys, autozone, advance auto parts, etc that is probably labeled with the store's name. it's pretty cheap and is amazing stuff when used in automotive applications. i could imagine it would work well for the grips because that **** dries QUICK.

Air creates a natural pocket when compressed into small spaces and thus allows the grip to slightly increase its diameter when a large amount of air (compressed) is shot into a space. So, you hold the grip at the end of the awaiting bar, shoot air into the grip, and then press onto the bar. If you have created an adequate pocket, you won't have any friction and the grip will slip into place and then compress itself back onto the bar due to its elasticity.
The true solution to all of your complaints are lock on Ourys. They're only a tad bit more expensive (who cares?) and NEVER come loose.
can we get a "how to UN-install oury grips" thread?

Hairspray and the air line works well enough for my MTB, not good enough for the dirt-bike though, on that I use Honda-Line grip cement, otherwise you need to safety wire the grips, they will slip otherwise.

b) Why do you have hairspray? You metro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRKNkjY53aU&mode=related&search=). At least don't confuse your bike's sexual identity with that stuff.
I'm not the one throwing pink ourys on my bike....
And i use mounting adhesive on my mtn bike.
And for dirt bikes, i would hope everyone uses wire locks. If not they are just asking for it.

Air also gets them off just as easily. Shazam!
I've used air, water, soapy water and hairspray to both install and uninstall grips. Best so far = hairspray. Yeah, I got a s**t-ton of hairspray. I cut hair.

Sam why would you choose 24 hours over 5 mins?
I wouldn't, but if I used alcohol or hairspray I'd let it set from the time I got off work to the time I leave for work, always over 12 hours or ride one of the others and let it sit all day. I've only ever put them on that way and only ever gottem off by slicing them down the length of grip with a razor, cause they don't come off if you let it set a good while.
Say air compressor types would a set of strong lungs suffice for the air compressor method?

make sure to take pictures.
compressed air works because of the volume of air it puts out, as well as an pressurized computer spray can, just make sure you have a tight seal around it when you shove it in there.
As for getting them off, air works, as does soapy water
I'm not the one throwing pink ourys on my bike....
Glad someone picked that up.
I'd say if you have to destroy the grip when removing it, it's not really a good method. They might cost $6 over there but definately not here. If cleaninstalled grips slip in the intended use, just throw on some lock-ons.
I've always just rolled them off despite my remarks about brute force earlier. Not saying this is the way to go tho.

I've always cut them off as I'm likely to ride them to death, no point in saving them, never have switched colours for fashions sake w/out new bars or new bike etc

With the Honda-Line grip cement there's no need to safety wire the grips (Dirt-Bike), you'll literally wear the grips down to the bar, but they won't budge, I've ridden Moto-Cross and Desert races for over 10 years or so without a single issue on the HL cement, rode 10+ years using hairspray and safety wire before that, had more grip failures with the later. Just my experience. I had pink Oury's in the 80's, but they were cool back then.
This thread couldn't be more timely for me. I put on my blue Ourys last night using 3M mounting adhesive after reading this thread. I admit I had never thought of that, but it worked like a charm.
I wish I'd used white ones though. I can't help but make my conversion look like an 80's bmx bike no matter what I do.

ok so let's suppose that one has literally no money for product to install grips on risers... what would you suggest... considering i've tried everything and nothing seems to work for my sweaty palmed ass...
force it on without lube.. it is the best method anyways.

Water didn't work to well for me. Slid right on my easton risers, and they don't move side to side at all, but the end twists around too much. I'm going to glue them down over the weekend, when I put my bullhorns back on.

Golf club grip tape is the **** to make sure they never come off. Double sided tape, wrap where the grips are to go, splash a little solvent (mineral spirits, turpentine, what have you) in the grip and on the tape to soften the adhesive and slide them on. Takes an hour or so to set up but it will take a razor to get them off. You can use a hook blade razor if youre using carbon bars.

's easy. motorcycle trick: just put em into really hot water for a while and they'll become slightly bigger. then quickly dry em off and slide onto handlebars without lube. to get em off: let respective side of handlebar with grip rest in a bucket with really hot water for a while. off it goes.
