Ive been hearing some bad stuff about them. Did they sell the company in the late 90's and beucase now they are selling walmart bikes their upper line suffers too? Is it becuase its all one big factory now and the upper bikes are made there along the crap bikes?

I have a goose from 97', I hope mine is from the before time, hehe. It says made in Taiwan for Service Cycle Bicycle Company. It seems like it must be, after all its still here. I remember when I bought it I was proud of the name becuase you never would see a Mongoose for sale anywhere else but a good bike shop.

its not the same company it was before that $1 million settlement a few years ago

http://www.cpsc.gov/businfo/frnotices/fr03/brunswck.html

its now owned by Pacific, a division of Dorel, which makes a lot of the low end bikes that are sold in Canada, although it keeps a few brands for the lbs's (Miele, GT)

http://www.dorel.com/product.htm

http://www.pacific-cycle.com/brands/

It sells Schwinn at Canadian Tire (hardline dept store) and Mongoose at Zeller's (discount dept store) up here

The Mongoose is not bad for the price, Zeller's uses it as a trade up from their in-house tech-pro brand ($99.97 for a 21" MTB)...

my little brother has a mongoose Basher that he got for a $100. Its the weirdest thing. It has disc brakes in the front and regular brakes in back and the front tire has the clamp for removal but the back tire has a bolt. Kinda heavy but definitely ridable.

I've herd that they now have two lines of bikes, one for the mass-market world and another for "real" bikes. I've read some pretty good reviews on some of the the bikes from the better line. I haven't ridden one and don't know anyone with one, so I can't give you any real-worl input on them though.

Are Mongoose bikes still good?

NO. Mongoose hasn't built a decent bike since about 1984.

I will argue that:

Their low end stuff is crap, but their top of the line bikes are legit.
