Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - flip n chop minus the flip

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
i caught these on fgg today:

i'm not sure that i see the utility of this design.

I saw them, and I dont think I could grip them as well that way. I like them the other way.

I saw those too, and thought they were pretty ********.

that's just stupid, why even chop them if you're not gonna flip 'em.
i put did that by on time (not on purpose), had an old stem, chopped, then tried to remove them to flip... would not come out. Stem and Bars had become one. My "horns" were shorter than that. Not ideal, but it still gives you more options than just a straight bar

I had to read that about 10 times.... still can't figure it out either

yeah, i'm not getting it. and why did they wrap their top tube all the way back there?
oh yeah, and they painted their crown race.

dude saved at least 200 grams. sweet top tube protector too.
Those look dangerous. No way I would stand up and pedal on those.
Clearly, the poor fellow is also not clear on the concept behind a top tube protector either.

I believe someone on fgg forums said it best in reference to those bars, "Your wrists must hate you".

Being different for the sake of being different is hardly a new trend. ;)
what IS a tube protector for?

protecting the top tube. :D
what IS a tube protector for?
With no rear brake cable to slow their momentum, the bars of a track bike can swing freely and easily dent the bike's top tube. The damage is cosmetic, but is in a very visible place.

the top tube protector is there because that dude rides without a saddle on his seatpost.
the chop and ? bar is metaphorically identical to:

looks like the TT protector lines up with the U lock.
edit: forgot to hate on the bars
i can kind of see how it makes sense, i use regular road drops and usually just ride on the shoulders (where the brake hoods would be). however, i agree that it's silly to chop off the rest of the handlebar.

Clearly, he is protecting his personal bottom tube and its surroundings by indirect application of this protector.

By removing most of the available surface area, the bike's owner is obviously trying to condition his mandibles for the Vulcan Neck Pinch.
Tube pad is to protect his tender, boney shoulder while carrying it up the dorm hall stairs.
maybe he carries his bike up stairs or something.
How the hell did I miss this?

you forgot polaroid in the spokes, lol
okay my initial response to that image, over the bar chop, is this: who in their right mind modifies what looks to be a fuji track that intensely and CHOOSES to keep their original stem and saddle? two of my least favorite parts on the bike...
anyway. i have thought about chopped drops unflipped before. i ride the fuji ergo drops (not by choice), and they are pretty nicely shaped for riding on the hoods; i get good leverage for hill climbing and whatnot. the only scary part about that is that if you're really hot/wet/not used to it, it's possible to lose your grip from that position... i would know. but yeah, assuming this kid has the same riding style, maybe he figures, "hey, i don't ever ride in the drops but enjoy the hand positioning i get from the rest of these bars, so why not cut the bottoms off?" i mean, it's kind of funny when you look at my dirty ass white bar tape and see that i hardly ever use my drops.
well. that's my input.

No, no ,no... Were taught the basic elements of design back in foundations. This poor soul is clearly not educated.
Two of my friends actually did that (old drops chopped and not flipped), but the purpose behind that is to have normal road brake levers (with hoods) and just raise the bars so that you can ride less aggressively (not hunched down) and not have the lower part looking awkward (if that makes any sense).
I personally wouldn't do it, but hey, who gives a f*ck anyways!
I saw a few of those in NYC about 3-4 years ago. Never seemed to catch on cause they ain't practical.

i dont see the point... by cutting them off you are just taking away a potential hand position. even if you never use it ever, why not just keep it? its the same thing when i see people who cut the bottoms of the bars off right under the brake levers configured normall on a road bike. seriously, what the ****? what were those drops doing to you? heh
Now do you guys understand why we need a grammatical standard? :)
i think that is quite different from non-capitalization. there is a difference between non hitting shift and completely missing words and letter.

seriously, though, maybe the rider of that bike occasionally flips the bars for longer rides. or maybe has their own reasons. or, maybe, yeah, we think it's silly. but then again, so is riding track bikes on the streets, or dodging traffic the way lots of us do, or riding sans handbrakes, or any one of a number of things we do...
i put did that by on time (not on purpose), had an old stem, chopped, then tried to remove them to flip... would not come out. Stem and Bars had become one. My "horns" were shorter than that. Not ideal, but it still gives you more options than just a straight bar
Make having the bar with cut go fine to holding one's hand of ride. If steering acheive knowing how always shape can impact tension of weight. Love viewing special push for bike using.
oh man this thread is my favorite.

dude saved at least 200 grams.
A light road bar weighs 200g. He saved something like 50. Most ******** handlebar ever. There were two bikes with the same bar setup in the pic thread, but with road brake levers... The owners deserve a kick in the balls for that.
