Triathlon - Thinking about a first Tri

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello, Im not new to BF but, I am new to this paticular forum. I am a regular road cyclist and I race for a local team. I have been thinking more and more about triathalons. I am a competive swimmer and cyclist and it seems that i would be a natural for one. I am not a slow runner, i used to do X-Country but, i didn't really like it.
What are some of the things I should look into before signing up for one of these? Im sorry, i know that this forum must get loads of these type of posts.
Thanks, Atl

Just go for it. If you are a competitive swimmer you will get out of the water faster than most and not have to deal with huge groups of people. You can use your road bike as is if you want, and really, as long as you are in decent shape, you'll be fine. I would start with a sprint tri though. Just to get your feet wet. Someone else might have better info, i'm just kinda telling you what I did. haha Good luck!

Just go out and have fun! Go out and try a sprint. With little training, I started with the Olympic distance and laughed through the entire event. I played some more with several sprints to learn the transitions. Bottomline . . . just do it. Set your goal to finish. Doesn't matter how fast or how slow.
I joined a triathlon club that trains a lot together (versus training by myself). Faster riders, swimmers and runners keep on pushing me . . . . my competitive nature doesn't like to be last to finish any of our practices.
Enjoy!

Aye, start with a sprint, they're fun... do dry runs of the transition and of swim-bike and bike-run sessions in training. And then just go for it :)
