Folks,
Ran over a nail (BIG one) this morning that managed to penetrate wheel, tube, AND part of the rim as shown here:

The nail is one of those big ten penny variety. The red arrow depicts how far the nail went into the rim. My question is do I need to be concerned about the structural strength of the wheel now?
Thanks,
Paul

Yes.

I doubt that the wheel's strength would have been seriously compromised by a single punched hole. However, I would not take the risk if I were you, I'd get the rim replaced asap.

The rims strength comes from the circular shape, and if the sheet of metal that creates that shape is damaged, the wheel strength goes down.
My question is do I need to be concerned about the structural strength of the wheel now?
If your spoke nipples are in upside down like in the drawing...yes.:D

As long as there arn't any deep ruts or jagged edges, it's probably fine. Smooth it out and put tape of some kind (electrical would probably be best) over the area so that it doesn't puncture the tube.
