First I was wondering how most MTB races work, mainly how long they are, things like that. I know there are different types like XC and downhill but in general how long are MTB races compared to, say, road races?

I was also wondering if anybody knew of any races in western michigan? I found a good road race that I think I might enter next summer but I haven't found anything for mtb racing.

Thanks for the help

Mountain bike races around here range anywhere from 5 miles to 100 miles. Generally speaking though, beginner classes race around 8-12 miles, sport (intermediate) classes race around 14-20 miles, and expert/pro classes race around 20-30. It really just depends on the course and the race director's decisions- there are no set "official" distances.

As far as finding races locally goes, check out bikereg.com and active.com. Also, get in touch with a good local shop. They should be in the know about events going on.
