Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I know of Curtlo, Teesdale, both whom will build a base frame for $700. Who else?

I vote for....
HUFFY!!!! ....LOL!:D
Seriously (no offense to framebuiders intended here:) ) If you are actually looking to get a custom steel frame, you might rephrase the question...
"What's the average price range for an entry level custom steel frame?"
There....isn't that a nicer way of asking? Doesn't imply that a custom framebuider is "cheap"!!
They're NOT, they're trying to make something they love and make a living at the same time.
If you want "cheap", Huffy offers a whole bike for less than my monthly internet connection!
sorrrryyyyy, I just couldn't help but reply to this post! LOL for sure....

Try posting your question at the phred.org framebuilders list (http://www.phred.org/mailman/listinfo/framebuilders) all of those guys work cheap.
Joe Bringheli
Doesn't have time to make very many frames per year. Can be found at www.bringheli.com.
I bellieve that he charges $500 for a basic frame and fork and $600 with upgraded tubing. You might have to wait a few months for him to build one.

Joe is pretty inexpensive. But, he doesn't paint. I asked him last summer about a frame and he said basically what you did but with the caveat that he doesn't do paint. Add another $100 - $200 for paint and he is basically where all the other guys are. BTW he does frame prep very inexpensively. He lives down the street and will do it while you wait, prep that is.
