There is an older fellow here in town, that I meet up with, and we race a course that is about 1/2 mile strait, then a 90 degree turn, then about a mile strait again. There are no stopsigns, or traffic lights, and the speed limit is 35. We occasionally exceed the speed limit, but I have always wondered about street racing. Well, today I was looking through Kentucky's revised statutes on driving and found KRS 189.505 which says no MOTOR vehicle racing, and KRS 189.510 no HORSE racing on public roads. So apparently bike racing is legal so long as you don't break other laws (speeding, reckless operation, so forth). Yeah for me!

I also just found KRS 189.993 " for vehicle with less than 5 hp, the maximum speed is 35 mph in any location."
Luckily I can only exceed 35 for a short time down hill.

Horse racing is out?
If you race a bicycle against a horse, are you both busted, or just one?

That doesn't mean the cops won't ticket you for something else just out of spite.
I grew up in Ky and remember getting a ticket from some ******* cop for "leaving the keys in a parked vehicle".
what???
All because he thought I was up to something no good when he found my car parked in a vacant lot and got pissed when I wasn't.

If you are racing against one horse neither of you can go over 35 M.P.H. If you are racing against five horses, they are allowed to exceed 35 M.P.H. but you are not. Doesn't sound fair to me.

Just how much horsepower can you produce?

A fit cyclist can produce +/- 5%, 1/2 hp.

Even with the smaller hills here on the north side of the ohio, I can get faster than 35 going downhill. Of course, being a fat man, I do have a serious case of gravity poisoning :) :(
Do they KY laws say anything against being too fat to go slow down a hill? Because I'll go ride over there otherwise! :p

Consider a human body is not a regulated engine, don't worry about it.

Sounds stupid. If you really want to race find a local race.

1 horsepower = 745.699872 watts
I think that Lance A. can generate about 500 + watts sustained...
It is my understanding that some top track racers can generate over 2000 watts (but I have no proof of this) ...
So, its hardly likely that they can get close to 5 horsepower ... lol
5 hp == 3725 watts...

It's testament, though to the efficiency of the bicycle that we can go so fast on such a small power input.
Some experimental fully-faired recumbant bikes have exceeded 120kph on that same zero point something HP, as fast as a lot of out-of-tune cars.

You never sprint raced with somebody on the road? I find that hard to believe.
Boy, I hope it's legal. Every race I've ever been in has been on a city street or county road.

All hail UMneyDurak, king of self control!
I don't take "training rides" I ride for fun. And apparently, the way I ride for fun is legal, yeah for me!
What's the old saying? "All you need for a bike race is two guys on bikes."

About it.... If I link up with another rider on a ride, we both often end up pushing harder than we would if we had not hooked up. I love it:)
