I took the trash to the dump sunday and came home with a rather nice Shogun 400 vintage of 1983. (tange #2 frameset, Shimano comps with SR compact cranks and pedals). Alas, it's 52cm-far too small for me, but just the right size to temp my elder daughter off her damn mountian bike. I did a quick saftey check, oiled the rusty chain, cranked the seat and bars down, and went for a ride with her. She loved it! So I've been detail stripping it and servicing the hubs, BB, ect.
The deal breaker could be the friction stem shifters. She's only ridden index, and I want her transition to road bikes to be as smooth as possible. My options are DT shifters or barcons, as I have a 6 speed DT/7speed barcon set laying around. This is one of the rare instances where the 7-speed freewheel screws on with no issues, so the question is: what's better for a first road bike?

Hard to say. Granted, this isn't exactly conventional, but what about Thumbies? Failing that, I'd think bar-cons would be a reasonable choice. Also, be sure you show her how to feather the FD so she doesn't get grinding noises when she's riding along.

Think of it as a challenge. Like someone improving their driving skills by learning to drive a standard transmission after mastering an automatic. It's a step up!
