Living Car Free - Just did my grocery shopping for 6 months

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Thanks to the tips I have received
on this forum, I just completed 1/2
of all my grocery purchases for the
next 6 months via the Internet.
I was sweating where to get the best
prices and how many stops it would
take on my bike and now I am just
gonna go out and ride for FUN!
Anyway,... I am aware of the cost of
fuel to get the stuff to my door, and
endless arguments can be made pro
and con, but at least 'I' didn't spend
any money on gas doing 1/2 my
shopping for the next 6 months.
PS: I bought a 44# bag of whey protein
powder, a 5 lb bag of psyllium husk and
a 1000 pack of Stevia sweetner. And
other than the skim milk to make my
smoothies with, that is all I need for
the next 6 months. Sort of a bland diet,
eh? That, and all the vitamins and
supplements I take are still keep'n
me healthy.
Anyway,.. I just wanted to pass that
success story on to you die hard CAR
FREE folk.

Just curious, why? Is all you eat protein shakes?

No fresh fruits or vegetables? Doesn't sound too healthy, if you ask me.
How can you possibly east nothing but whey protein, psyllium husk (I have no idea what this is), sweetener, skim milk, and vitamins for six months?
Do you at least have a garden?
I wish I had a garden. I should start one on the balcony hahaha

Don't laugh. there's a good internet forum (http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/balcony/) on balcony gardening. You can grow a lot of food and flowers, even trees, in containers on a small balcony. Maybe Ned should consider one before he gets scurvy. ;)

I do about two or three real meals a week
but YES, I live on whey protein powder.
Check out the benefits of the stuff at:
http://www.wheyoflife.org
It helped me lose 90 lbs and keep it off
for 7 years and I ain't gonna go back on that.
Besides, my doctor is impressed with my
lean muscle development, absolute loss of
any flab and how I can ride my bike with
abandon.
And I take a full range of vitamin and mineral
supplements in nice big doses as well as
extra calcium, magnesium and zinc, and
CQ10 and I take 10 grams of omega 3
Fish Oil per day too. I can assure you
I am healthy, trim and fit for a 55
year old person. Top 10 % easily
I would guess.
And I did do some grocery shopping on my
Rhoades Car tonight, but I took a 15 mile
detour just for the fun of it.

I thought the reason you bought your Rhodes car was so that you could make trips to the grocery store and carry plenty of stuff home. I'm not trolling, I'm just curious.

I think you're cool ned. When you figure out what you should do, you just go ahead and do it and you don't give a zit what anybody thinks. :)

Indeed...I've enjoyed your posts over the past few months as well, ned.

seems lazy to be honest.
Instead of working out a balanced meal, then preparing and cooking that meal, you rely on supps. Could be compared to buying weight watchers ready meals. Sure... they have everything you need to survive, but they are bland as hell!.
What a pointless endeavour, half the joy of having a diet is discovering what you can eat in a healthy fashion, seems as if you've found a way to lose weight, and keep trim, but have a completely boring diet.

Or some might find it to be efficient, or simple...

I have a protein shake a few times a week after going to the gym. Sometimes add a banana or strawberries - they take 1 minute to make, fills you up, taste good, (i drink myoplex), and help your body recover after working out.
i love cooking too, but i drink them for the same reason i eat cliff bars out and about - simple and easy

Sure it is. Could simplify his entertainment/cultural enrichment needs by reading the same book over and over and over. Why complicate things with variety?

Go easy on him, maybe he lost his taste buds years ago in a tragic popsicle accident or something.
But kudos on the weight loss, man. That is a tough thing to do and 90 lbs is impressive any way you come about it and you should be proud.

Well said. Exactly why I've been watching Footloose every weekend since 1985

I eat to live... not live to eat. I think the taste of food is overblown alot of times. Now I personally don't think I could do the all protien shake thing, but at the same time to each his own. I don't think its lazy, its just what he wants to do. I HATE sitting around trying to figure out what to eat, i think its a waste.

I would agree with you, except in my
30s and 40s I was a serial yo-you dieter
and I got sick of screwing up all the time.
So I found for me what was a perfect
losing and maintenance diet and am
sticking with it. 7 years of 90 lb weight
loss, and I am grateful.
Besides folks, don't feel sorry for me.
On my diet with the great amount of
exercise I get I can go out virtually
any day of the week I want and do
a gourmet meal at a decent restaurant
with friends. And I do. Steaks, Chinese,
Mexican, Italian. I just don't do stuff
that I have a history of screwing up
on, like pizza.
And besides, I have enough food in my
house now that if there were a major
power outage or civil disruption, I
wouldn't have to shop for 6 months.
I also have canned food, dry beans, rice
and all that stuff. I just don't buy junk
food and find that the Whey keeps me
healthy.
And yeh, I don't give a whit what other
people think, I am gonna do it my own
way! :O) (And live life large on my limited
income, and laugh baby, laugh. -
It's good for the soul, and longevity.)

Ah ha ha ha ha! That is a good one!
Luigi Cornaro, 16th century nobleman from Venice, advocated a minimal, abstemious diet. He gave the same reasons Ned does. If Luigi had detractors, that may not have mattered because he certainly outlived them. He was known as Cornaro the Centenarian.

I have read that extremely high intake of protein can increase the risk of cancer...
You might want to look into that... just in case...

If you call that living. I prefer quality of life, rather than seeing who can last the longest at any price.

ahh, but isn't quality of life in the eye of the beholder, so to speak?
If you call that living. I prefer quality of life, rather than seeing who can last the longest at any price.
I'll let Luigi answer for himself.
Wherefore, I say, being arrived at my ninety-fifth year, God be praised, and still finding myself sound and hearty, content and cheerful, I never cease to thank the Divine Majesty for so great a blessing, considering the usual condition of old men. These scarcely ever attain the age of seventy, without losing health and spirits, and growing melancholy and peevish...
And first, I am of service to my country, and what a joy is this. I find infinite delight in being engaged in various improvements, in connection with the important estuary or harbor of this city, and fortifications; and although this Venice, this Queen of the Sea, is very beautiful, yet I have devised means by which it may be made still more beautiful, and more wealthy, for I have shown in what way she may abound with provisions, by improving large tracts of land, and bringing marshes and barren sand under cultivation. Then again, I have another great joy always present before me. Some time since, I lost a great part of my income, by which my grandchildren would be great losers. But I, by mere force of thought, have found a true and infallible method of repairing such loss more than double, by a judicious use of that most commendable of arts, agriculture...

I'm sure Tibetian Monks believe they are living the good life. Good for the ascetics and everyone else who takes their pleasure from self denial.

What was abstemious for a 16th C Venetian noble? Only a half gallon of wine per meal? Leave the feathers on the songbirds in the souffle?

Eating is absolutely one of the greatest joys in life. If I had to choose between my taste buds and my left arm, I'd start shopping for a prosthetic lickety-split!
Pythagoras, one of the all-time great wise men, ate nothing but beans and lived a long healthy life. Thoreau, my favorite philosopher, had a very simple diet--again, mostly beans. Personally I like a little more variety in my diet, but I'm trying hard to make it simpler and healthier. The standard American diet sure isn't much good for sustaining health, but to each his or her own!

nedgoudy, where did you buy your 44lb bag of whey protein? Is it whey protein concentrate or whey protein isolate? Thanks in advance!

Go easy on him, maybe he lost his taste buds years ago in a tragic popsicle accident or something.
Actually, his could be way better than yours. A lot of people think that if you can enjoy stuff like curry, habaneros salt and pepper that you have stronger tastebuds because you add more flavor. I think its the reverse. You need all that ketsup, mustard and relish because the taste of a hot dog isn't much to you. To some, its all that is needed.
He could be a supertaster so that what tastes bland to you is to him a subtle symphony of flavors.
I personally can't stand pepper in anything. A little bit of pepper overwhelms all other flavors so all you taste is pepper. It's no wonder it became popular as a disguise for the flavor of rotting meat.
