I sort of *caused* manic reaction (not actually "panic" ,but manic happiness) in my mom once....only to let her down a few minutes later. :D I'm evil!!
When I was about 21 or 22, I called her (on April Fool's Day) and told her I was getting married. I told her I was marrying Rachel....a friend from high school. I knew she'd fall for it...because to her Rachel and I were "just friends" (which was true), but I knew she'd believe maybe we were hiding a relationship (she's gulliable).
Anyway...I told her that....gave about 10 minutes for it to REALLY sink in....and she was even starting to make some plans, etc... Before I screamed APRIL FOOLS over the phone.
I was afraid to go home that night. :)

When I thought my BF was missing. I cried and cried and cried. I already had my fiance die on me and I didn't want to lose another one. :(
I had this mole on my arm change shape/size drastically in what seemed like
overnight. Since I'm out in the sun alot I figured I had skin cancer and was
sure it was bad (malignant mellanoma). Between the time I called the Dr
and I was finally seen I went through scared, angry, sure I was dying
and started contemplating who would get my stuff (bikes). Got to the Dr,
the damn thing dissapeared. Seems it "burst" and was bleeding under my skin
(thus the change) eventually just went away. weird.

he cleated you so you stood up for yourself and sprained his anke. if he tries anything tomorrow, elbow him in the face when you both go for a header.

I don't "freak out," my adrenalin dumps and I get scary logical/calm, (which is why I'm going to school to be a paramedic,) but sometimes, in a stressful or chaotic situation, people who are panicking can make me that way too, if I'm not careful. Sorry, no good stories about losing my ****, but I did fight off two muggers one time, one of which had a bat, that was pretty cool.

October 17, 1989 - 5:04 pm. I was on BART and our train had just pulled into the Oakland City Center Station. It felt like the driver goofed with the brake, and then the train started rolling from side to side and the tile walls in the station were doing the wave. It was over almost as soon as it got started. I didn't get back to our apartment in Concord until about 9:00 pm. Our daughter's preschool was closed, and I had no idea where she was. Fortunately, when I got home, I found that our apartment manager had gone over an picked her up - but the time in betwen was a good 20 minutes of fearing the worst.
Usually when I wake up in the morning and realize that I'm late for work. I guess I've transitioned from free spirit to corporate *****.
Last sunday my gf woke up at 9am sunday morning thinking it was monday and damn near fell out of bed.

Just remembered another one.......the day the federal building in Oklahoma City was bombed by terrorists.
I heard just a small "blurb" on the radio and didn't realize it was in Oklahoma City. I thought it was local in Tampa and one of the buildings downtown was blown up. I was freaked for a bit since BOTH of my parents worked downtown.
It was about 1/2 hour to 1 hour before I realized it was even in Tampa that it happened.

Theres the time I thought I had testicular cancer, but it turned out to just be harmless lumps from riding too much without shorts on a mtb with a seat with crushed rails.
And I by the way also know some people in the bay area who have had some close calls with earth quakes. One person I know had to be pulled off of the bay bridge after it broke apart.
At my university I would ride my bike to the beach mid-morning, then cruise on into my noon class. Being a naive freshman, I just left my Trek 1200 unlocked in the back of the auditorium as I sat in class to meet the girls, er, listen to the professor. As soon as class ended, I was about to talk to this girl who was glancing over and smiling, but I looked back for my bike and... it was gone!!!   Oh ****!!! I freaked out and ran outside only to see my roommates holding my bike and laughing at me. By the time I turned around to find the girl, she was gone. :( I learned my lesson that day to always lock-up my bike.

Being MY sister, when the bridge collapsed the car that went down the drop was a while in front of her.
The CHP told my sister to get out of her car and walk back. She gave them a hard time because she didn't want to leave her brand new car.............:roflmao:

I live alone. One night I was awakened from a very sound sleep by an unfamiliar and beligerent voice in my house, which scared the crap out of me. Once I was half-way awake I realized that the voice was coming from my answering machine (I was out of it - I never heard the phone ringing). I was somewhat relieved. It was an extremely intoxicated woman who had called the wrong number but was too drunk/stupid to realize it. She was expressing her displeasure at calling her friends house and hearing a man's voice on the answering machine: (in very slurred speach) "Who the f*** are you? What the f***are you doing at Stacy's house? I'm going to come over there and kick your f****ng a$$...." So I'm still half asleep... and now I'm pissed off! I've got some idiot drunk coming over here to kick my a$$... I go back to the bedroom muttering "bring it on!":fight: I was starting to get into the safe to load up a Remington 870 12 gauge when I was finally awake enough to realize the drunk woman has no idea where I live. I go back to bed muttering "stupid drunks..."

I was giving my husband a back rub, and saw that he had a mole that had changed shape. He kept saying it was no big deal. I made him an appointment at the local dermatologist, and they did a biopsy. TWO WEEKS later, the biopsy came back. Malignant Melanoma. We were crushed. I was sick with worry. We went to UC Davis. They told us at Davis that it was ridiculous that it took so long for the biopsy, since any dermatologist would realize just by looking that he had a melanoma, and that it was crazy that the doc did a shave biopsy instead of a punch biopsy, because the shave type can spread the cancer through ones body! They did surgery on him a few weeks later; "melon balled" his back (as my husband puts it), and we were told that the cancer had not spread. Dr. G-, bless his soul, told my husband he would have died if it had gone a month or two longer. I have never been so relieved.

Something kind of similar happened to me in 2003. At 4:00 am sharp someone was trying to break into my moms car as was indicated by the alarm going off. It was probably the same idiot who stole her owners manual the week before (which is why the alarm was turned on). I grabbed my already loaded 870 from behind my bedroom door and my surefire 6P and went out to investigate. I was too late, but a neighbor was up with her then very young baby saw a man in dark cloths running for it.

Like a few members have already said, my gf was late. She told me at the end of a stressful day, and I freaked out. I couldn't be near her without crying, so I had her take me home. I then called my ex-gf, and went and talked with her for 8 hours or so. In the meantime, my gf had called my house to make sure I was OK. My dad answered, discovered I wasn't in my room, and that the van was gone. He told her this, and she told him that she was worried about me. I got home after he'd left for work, and went straight to bed. I woke up to the phone ringing. It was my dad calling to make sure I was OK. I then remembered I had a haircut appointment that morning, so I called to let them know I was running late. I also called in to work and told my boss I needed to take the day off (I didn't have to be at work until noon). That afternoon, my gf called to tell me that she got her period. Why the hell hadn't she waited just one more day to tell me she was late?
And FYI: my ex-gf was/is a lesbian, I just didn't know it until years later.
One time I thought my car got stolen when I was in college. I normally parked it in front of my gf's place, than walked the half mile to campus. After the two of us got off work one Friday, we started walking back to her place and planning out the party we were having to celebrate St. Patty's day. We decided that we'd take my car to Costco for supplies (read alcohol). We got to her apartment complex and aside from the cars in the car ports, there were NO other cars in the complex. I have a two way remote pager for my car that generally will send/ receive a signal up to 1/4 mile away. As we walk the complex, I'm pressing the button and not getting a signal back. By this time I had had my car broken into at least three times, stolen once, and my previous car totaled in a head on crash so I'm in full on "crap, here we go again mode." We ask the grounds keeper if any cars were towed and they said no, so I call the police to report it stolen and my girl goes to talk to the apartment manager. While I'm on the phone I start thinking "hmm... car's paid off, insurance will cover it, sweet I'll get a nice chunk of cash." The officer taking my call starts asking me questions. One specifically jarred my memory; was there anything valuable in the car. I don't keep anything valuble other than a jar of change... which I used that morning when I bought a parking permit to park on campus. I explained to the officer that the car was not stolen and I knew exactly where it was; under the big tree in the parking lot. I got off the phone and told my girlfriend we needed to go back to campus because I left something there. As we're walking she's going on and on and on about how f'd up people are and yadda yadda yadda. We get to campus and I pull out my keys, disarm the alarm and she starts busting up laughing. I was the laughing stock of the party the next night, and many family gatherings since.

When I was dating this one particular girl...she had a long roadtrip ahead of her...well that went fine, but on the way back, i never got a call saying she was OK...then I got a call from my friend saying a building in her area was on fire.
I have never done a 60mi drive that fast....good thing that road between our towns was dead straight and had pristine visiblity that night...I never looked at the speedo, just drove as fast as I felt safe with, got there, found out my friend was being dense, and for some reason thought she lived somewhere else.
He should have been glad I was already over there and decided to stay the night...I wanted to choke that guy so bad for freaking me out like that.

Oh no, I think I'm falling for a false alarm
Like an all-day second stuck
Until you crunch the right arm
Well if I open my eyes, if I just pay attention to McNew
Well, I just held back
To listen to your cues
So it's not enough I never meant to hold you down
Waiting for the firestorm
Waiting for the false alarm
Well, is it really true? Well, I know, I mean I guess, uh, why not
Well is it really true, I don't know,
Too hard to figure out
I'm gonna mark my words, cross my eyes and stomp my feet
Cause I don't want you feeling bad, feeling bad, feeling
Worse than you do
Well, I'll stand my ground, hide behind a fake smile
Think I'll talk about something else
Just for a little while
Aw, said it once, said it twice, said it - you can tell it's the same old tune
Straight down to the bitter end
Tell me when there's more to go there soon
It's gonna hold my tongue in place, think about what to do
If you don't see nothing wrong this time
Well I'm taking it out on you

humm... a few good scare this summer
1) found a lump in my chest just to have the hospital find one more while they were doing a mammogram. The two hours wait was the worst, in a limbo, between Ill escape out of this intact or...
funny how you start thinking "have I done enough for my kids?"
" I should of went riding yestearday"
I should of save more money for college for them " ect..
I walk out of there with the great news and I even said to someone working there "GUESS WHAT??" and he looked at me like I had two heads and I said "I DONT HAVE BREAST CANCER!" :)
2) ( on a lighter note) My daughter has a pet tortoise, she's had him since he was born, we had to change his home 4 times in 5 years because he went from being as big then the palm of my hand and he is now 2 feets in diameter.. we love him and he is smart and friendly and will live to be 100!!
One day I brought him outside ( we always do) but something came up and we left him there for a few hours just to return and have us all in panic calling his name"TIKI!!!" as if he would come running when he hears his name:rolleyes: a neighbor spotted him 3 houses down and asked us if we were looking for a tortoise! small story? not if you have kids! my daughter would of never forgave me!
3) my daughter has severe life threatning allergies and the doctor always told us that since she is allergic to egg that there would be a good chance she would be allergic to bee stings and since there is no way to get tested for this, we would have to wait for her to get stung by one, you can imagine how stressful it is to know if one day my child could stop breathing at anytime anywhere...
Just last week, she got stung.. came in the house screaming and we didnt want to tell her what could happend, so we kept talking to her, pretending nothing.. waiting with the epipen and telephone... false alarm... HUGE relief... she is not allergic! :) :) :)

Just remembered another one.......the day the federal building in Oklahoma City was bombed by terrorists. That one did it for me. I was in Oklahoma City. The headquarters of the company I worked for is two blocks away from the Murrah Building and my then-wife worked three blocks away. Couldn't get a hold of anyone for hours. Turned out everyone I knew was OK. All was good for me but many people weren't as lucky.
Side note though, my wife changed after the bombing and that was the beginning of what eventually led to her leaving.

Early November, 1996.
My son was three years old and my wife was 8 1/2 months pregnant with our first daughter, Madison.
I dozed off on the loveseat, watching television. I awoke a few hours later to my wife snoozing on the couch and static on the screen. I decided to go ahead and just stay put until morning, so I turned off the TV and rolled over. The only light in the living room was moonlight, coming in the kitchen window. That's when I caught some movement from the corner of my eye...
Over the back of the couch, I could see a figure moving slowly from the kitchen into our dining area, (towards the living room). My mind started racing, "Where are the dogs? Crap! In their kennels. Where is my shotgun? Crap! In the kitchen closet. Is there anything in here to use as a weapon? Is this person as night-blind as I am right now? Do I wait for him to get closer so I have the element of surprise or do I yell at him to see if he leaves? Crap! Crap! Crap! He's almost to the couch."
This is probably the most scared I've ever been in my entire life. I could hear my heart beating in my ears. I decided to jump the intruder as soon as he came around the end of the couch. However, he stopped behind it. Now I'm thinking that I'm going to have to dive over my wife to get at this guy.
There were probably two minutes between me turning off the TV and our intruder stopping at the back of the couch. I braced myself and slowly got to a seated position. I was within seconds of making my move when the heater turned off and our intruder floated to the ceiling...????
It turned out to be a four-foot, mylar, bat balloon that my son got for Halloween. It had lost some of its buoyancy and made it down the hall and into the kitchen. It only took a little force from the air vents to keep it bobbing along at about the hight of a man and since it was behind the couch, I couldn't tell this guy had no legs!
The adrenaline rush was enough to keep me awake the rest of the night and the balloon got crammed into my son's closet.

when i broke my arm and my bones in my forearm where shredded and twisted and my doctor dsaid i might not have my functions back ever again, i was scared to death. but after surgery and after 3 months of worrying and a cast, then therapy everything turned out ok and all my functions were restored, except one, i cant twist my wrist all the way over like my other wrist, because my wrist joint or structure however you want to put it was crushed into small bits, and my surgen had to put it together like a puzzle.

Man, I remember that day too. There was a company in San Leandro I had to visit on a regular basis for a while, so I've driven many times on the highway that collapsed.
Back in 1982 I took my wife to the ER with severe abdominal pains. The doctor said, good news, bad news...Your wife is pregnant, but it looks like a tubal pregnancy (life threathening). They operated on her that night. What happened?? Well, my twin daughters turned 21 in April.
