So, I'm putting a couple of groceries into my panniers at Publix when one of the cashiers who is outside asks me about my bike and why I ride. I gave a short overview of how it's better excercise, it's fun, and it saves me money, and she's very interested. She doesn't own a car at the moment and is not really too far from her work. I told her about our shop and gave her a card. She's gonna be coming in sometime to look at a bike.
Amen brothas!

hallelujah, and amen. Velo-jesus is smiling upon you.
Tell it, Brother Falkon!
Coincidently, a former co-worker of mine just started working for Publix at their Lakeland Florida technology office, and said before he left that he might be interested in bike commuting there. He's only living about 5 miles away, compared to the 30+ miles away he lived from the job he had here. I'm not convince he'll really do it, though, but I should check up on him.
I just got hired by Avocent Corporation. They're about 7.5 miles from me one way and I'll be bike commuting. I can't wait!
Awesome !
You have saved another soul !
But there's more heathen out there...
:)
On the day before creation, god invented the bicycle and saw that it was good. He also saw that there was nowhere to ride it.
Why do you think he created the earth?

Lakeland FL is by no means a good ride on a bike. It can be done, and has been, but it's not easy. If your friend is going to the main publix warehouse, then he will have to contend with not only the cars coming and going to work, but trucks, delivery-people, taxis....The Publix whse. in Lakeland is a dangerous road. It is not conducive to cyclists, no shoulder, just pavement then a ditch. people will not expect a cyclist on this road. and there is nowhere to dodge a motorist other than the runoff ditch. If this is where your friend is thinking about commuting, then please tell him it is very dangerous for cyclists...if not, then please forget everything I just said and go out and have a cherry popcicle.....
Thanks, tomcryan, I will relay that on to him. He's an IT office worker, and I have no idea if his office is close to the warehouse or not. Hopefully not all the roads are like that!
If roads without shoulders were such a big concern, nobody would be commuting or riding touring rides.
My new t-shirt/bumper sticker want!! WWVJD? I love it!
Can I coat-tail the exuberance?
This morning, my coworker biked to work for the first time. He said he's a creature of habit, so in the disruption, he forgot his sunglasses, reading glasses, helmet (?), and a lot of other stuff, but it only took him 15 minutes. Hope he had fun. Maybe he'll build a routine around it.
How the hell do you forget your helmet on a bike ride? ;)
Forgot my helmet ONCE. My wife called me at work and told me her water broke
Back on topic, there are now FOUR bicycles in front of my work!!
I forgot my keys AND garage door opener the other day. I saw an old well-used bike that I hadn't seen before on the rack yesterday. it had a HUGE basket attached to the rack. man, you could do some shopping with THAT. made me want to go home, put a milk crate on my commuter, and go pick up some groceries. another commuter. praise VJ!
So, what would Velo-Jesus ride? A Surly LHT? A Trek FX7700? A custom job? Enquiring minds want to know.
a beater. but a cool beater.:)
WWVJR?
I don't know, but it better have one hell of a chainguard. Biking in a robe ain't easy.
I guess this answers our question

+1...or perhaps another AMEN! ;)

Let me know...The area I was talking about is cars and trucks, with no regard to anything not motorized. the area where the publix whse is mostly highgrade industrial routes.

That is the master plan of for mass-consumption ....
The entire world would be built up like this if it wasn't for the fresh supply of converts thanks to VJ.
:D

praise velo jesus! I believe that's a SS.
VJ would ride a wooden bike. He was, after all, an excellent carpenter...

Maybe she was just shopping for Falkon. D'ya think?

Not sure, but it would need a plastic jesus on the handlebars.

Oh, I don't care if it rains or freezes,
long as I got my plastic Jesus,
lashed securely to my handlebar... :D
Seriously, that wooden bike is cool! Is that real?

Wooden bikes are in fact real. I build furniture part time and while at a tool store, I saw one. The guy who builds them was there so I got to talking about the design. It's pretty interesting, but requires some serious maintenance, as far as I can tell -- wet wood is not happy wood. But the guy says that the ride is pretty stiff and he hasn't had any problems with frames breaking or anything. The bike that was on display was no heavier than my commuter rig, so I figured it was a viable machine for tooling around town. Said he's working on a mountain bike version.
The pic that I linked was from another site. There are lots of references out there if you google "wood bikes".

I'm afraid he'll have to go,
He's f@cking up my cyclopro,
And if I have a wreck, he'll leave a scar.
